About a year ago I resurrected my Dobro. It had been in pieces since about 1986 (it's a long story). I had most of the parts at hand with the exception of the original cone, spider & saddle, and cover plate. I purchased and installed a new cone, spider, & saddle from Resophonic Outfitters, and an inexpensive cover plate from China. It looks and sounds as good as it ever has.

A few weeks ago I was able to retrieve the original cone, spider, & cover plate. In order to keep the instrument as original as possible, I would like to reinstall the original cover plate.

The outer edge of the original plate is not perfectly flat. When resting on a flat surface, the front and rear edges (parallel to the strings) both rest flat, but the outer edges toward the bouts are raised about 1/8" to 3/16".

Here's my question: Will the cover plate screw down flush to the top, making the warpage a non-issue, or am I better off leaving well enough alone and leaving the Chinese knock-off in place?

It should be a non issue. The Beard cover plates on two of my guitars are similar to what you describe. It's not a problem if you install the screws carefully. I start as many as I can, turning one down a bit then and going to one on the opposite side of the cover. Then back to one next to the first etc. Each screw a little at a time. The cover flattens gradually as you go. Any screws you aren't able to start initially can be added as it flattens. The process is analogous to the recommended method for tightening wheel lug nuts. I hope this is helpful.
