I watched an old Austin City Limits DVD last night featuring Merle Haggard.
There were several good shots of Norm Hamlet playing a rather gaudy green pedal steel.
Would anybody know the brand of that guitar?
There was a name on the center front but I couldn't make it out.
Thanks!

Erv, I think that would maybe be his Rus-Ler Steel. Lots of flashy pinstripes and so on. _________________ Steel Learnin'

Erv, that was his Rus~Ler guitar. Built in East Phoenix by my friend Russ Russell.
I remember the day he picked it up at the Rus~Ler shop.
Pretty cool guitar with all the pin striping. _________________ Email: azpedalman@gmail.com

Hey Erv! I'm thinking that I might have seen the show you are talking about at some point where he played a Rus-ler guitar. Yes, it was a standout. Never cared for lime-green lollipops, ha ha. Regards, RK _________________ "think MORE...play LESS" |

Thanks so much!
Yes, it was a very unique guitar, not that I cared that much for the look but Norm certainly knew how to handle it!

John Ciano, a steel guitarist from NJ had one just like that. Even the pinstripes if I am recalling correctly, exact same color as well.. bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Saw Merle and the Strangers in Fargo (or maybe Grand Forks) in January of 1979. Norm was playing the Rus-Ler. We stayed in the Holiday Inn there. Next morning there was two generic looking tour buses and a generic tractor trailer in the parking area. Turned out to be the Haggard show rigs. Went into the restaurant for breakfast and in the next booth was Norm, Roy Nichols, Biff Adams, and another fellow I didn’t recognize. If I remember, Norm said he just got it. Really nice people. Asked if Merle was there too, they laughed and said no, he flies to the gigs. Their food came and we left. Got pics of that night but they’re long gone. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. |

I like the endplate design! Designs like this, and the ones on the Fulawka, ZB, and old Marlen guitars showed a little flair and thought. It was easier to tell the brand from the endplate design.
Nowadays, most all endplates (including those on the most expensive makes) are cheap and generic looking (all right angles). Take the nameplates off most all modern pedal steels, and looking at the fronts from twenty feet away, you can't tell one from another. |
