There are quite a few videos on YouTube with Jerry Byrd & Marty Robbins and Jerry is playing a Dobro.
Does anybody know what tuning he used on the Dobro?
Thanks,
Erv |

I kind of doubt that.
It doesn't sound like a 6th tuning. |

You can play his version of "Unknown Hula" exactly in "high A tuning" (Dobro tuning, one step higher): A-C#-E-A-c#-e (low to high).
Strange enough ... |

Peter,
I was going to suggest that tuning.
That is the original "Hawaiian" tuning and the one I still use on my Dobro as that's the tuning I learned on.
The original Hawaiian tuning can be either A high bass or low bass.

There is that Hawaiian tune with a name a mile long,on which JB used A major tuning. Don't have a clue why he chose that ! |

Consensus was that Jerry's playing a 7-string round neck tuned to his C6/A7 tuning on most of the songs. You can hear him re-tune to A6 for Maui Chimes.

Just retuned my guitar to A6 and THAT seemed to be the RIGHT tuning to play Jerry's version of "Unknown Hula" on a 6 string guitar
Only two weeks ago I figured out, how to play it exactly in High-A tuning. But A-6 is much more comfortable! |

A lot of the time when folks share links to old topics, YouTube videos etc., I have a theory that due to the modern era of 24/7 information overload - members here rarely click on the links.
If b0b had a "hall of fame" for best threads or topics on the SGF, the one Gerry linked above from 2007 about these Beyond the Reef episodes with Marty Robbins and Jerry Byrd would be a finalist for one of the best Steel Without Pedals threads of all time.
Basil Henriques was the gentleman who originally posted these videos on YouTube, and in the thread which I went back and read earlier I got a kick out of the back and forth exchanges between Baz and the late C.C. Johnson.
Most of us had never seen the videos prior to Basil putting them up on YouTube and we were blown away by Byrd's playing on a dobro. It inspired discussions on other forums at the time like www.reso-nation.org and the no longer in existence Jerry Douglas Forum that was a part of his website for many years.
No need to start from scratch and reinvent the wheel - we had a very thorough discussion about this 11 years ago, just click on Gerry's link above and it'll take you there. Then we can update and add some new content here in 2018. _________________ Mark |
