As much of a pain as that makes string changing, keeping the case closed is probably the best advice.

That looks very Valco-made, with a Selmer sticker applied and the thing weirdly modified to be bolted into the case.

French Selmer guitars are very rare. Without provenance I'm a bit suspicious of this one's origins. The cheap price just compounds those suspicions.

It's a Selmer "Portalectric" from about 1952, I've got one. Here's a link about them from a Hofner information site. http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/factfiles/hawaiian/cat4.html . In the main their guitars were OK.
