The first thing I notice about my new PSG is that the strings arereally close together. Learning to hit the right one,and miss its neighbors, is Challenge 1 right now.

Try starting with a few standard grips. 8-6-5 is what a lot of folks use as a "home" position. 10-8-6 is a good work out, too. 8-5 gets a lot of use as does 6-5-4 and 5-3.
There are lots of tips to be mined on the Forum...you'll get there!

I haven't gotten to the standard grips yet. I'm practicing some songs I already know on X6, w/o pedals, to begin training my fingers.
I need to look up standard grips, I hope today. So far I don't know what any are. I have a bunch of self-taught grips I use on C6 (which is A6 on my PSG, but same-o, same-o.)

Most pedal steels have string spacing of 11/32" and you're probably used to 3/8" - only 1/32" but it feels like a foot.
I use two different trombone mouthpieces for different purposes - one is 25mm and the other is 25.4mm (1"). The wrong one completely throws me - and that's only 1/64"!

I made my lap steel, string spacing is 1 cm center to center, which is real close to 3/8 but a tiny bit wider. When I look at my psg they don't look too different, but when I reach in there it's like they're almost touching.
I'll adapt, but right at the start it's crazy!

Although some of us still use bar slants at times, its not very often as a pedal or knee lever will do the trick.
Same way the bar is not lifted and moved to a new location like it is with a non-pedal. With Pedal, the accepted procedure is to mute the strings with the right hand and slide the bar to the new location.
As I started on lap steel, those were the things I had to "break" myself of doing. |

No you haven't, you've helped. It's a double necker and you just got me started on the E9 neck. I've been running scales since I read your post.
