The thing that drew me to the steel guitar 50 or more years ago,was the tone.I can't recall who I first heard playing steel, but I remember the tone so captivated me.
The tone that Alan Akaka gets from his Canopus lap steel is the sound that I remember from all those years ago. There's a video of him playing a preview to the Maui Steel Guitar Festival some years ago on YouTube.I don't know how to link to YouTube, the video contains a short interview, and Allan is strumming. And that sound to my ears is what a Steel Guitar should sound like.
Could someone post that vid? MAHALO in advance. _________________ I wanna go back to my little grass shack........ |

Whispering Lullaby. If Alan had hit every harmonic, I would have suspected sorcery. Tom, you probably heard Danny Stewart playing it, a signature tune of his. He plays it in the soundtrack of the movie, Aloma of the South Seas (1940). _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

It's not the man,It's the machine!I would love to hear Jeff Au Hoy play that Canopus lap steel!I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that Jeff's talent matched with Canopus tone would sell a lot of CD's
And I'm not kiddin'! _________________ I wanna go back to my little grass shack........ |

Jeff's tone playing on his long scale frypan is also a good example of that instrument. |
