Don Martz of Johnstown, PA, passed away the morning of February 2.
Those of you who knew Don knew that he was a kind and generous man, and a heck of a Steel Player. He mentored many in Western and Central Pennsylvania.
I met Don at Johnny Andrews' celebration, after he passed away in the summer 2015. Don played for years with Johnny, although by the time I met him and talked to him, he had stopped playing due to Arthritis. My mentor and steel player, Mark Pollock (Valentine), had been one of Don's students. Don and I exchanged numbers and spoke on a phone a few times, and I cherish those conversations.
RIP Mr. Martz |

Very sorry to hear this. Don was a good guy.
I got my first pedal steel from him, an Emmons student model 3+1, at a guitar show - I think it was Bob and Karen Drawl's show in Indiana, PA. I last saw him a few years ago at the Sonic Valley guitar show in Greensburg. He was struggling with the arthritis then, but was still hoping to get back into playing again. We talked for quite a while.
RIP, Don. |
