Please give us a feedback. I would love to hear from another pedal steel player to give advice or support to my daughter.

Thank you

She is off to a great start! She knows the fretboard well, that's for sure!

How long has she been playing? Did she pick it up on her own, or does she take lessons?

She's started when she's 10. Her Dad teach her the basic. Now she do it by her own. She can read the tablature.

Very nice job for just starting out. I started out much, much later in live. Unless I'm missing seeing them, looks like she is playing without picks. I started playing without picks myself. I would encourage to start working with picks. I apologize if I'm wrong about the picks. Good to see young players coming along. keep up the good work.

Very good. Our own Sarah Jory started at an early age and now rated at one of the worlds top players.

Yes, I would also suggest that she starts to get used to using picks. There are smaller sizes available for women and young children that should fit her. I started out playing at age 9, and I didn't have an issue with finding picks to fit me.

Playing with bare fingers on those strings for any length of time is going to be brutal, to say the least.

Maybe when she grows into the picks they will be fine. Meantime, she's not doing any damage; I like the feel of strings too.

I think Sharon has a nice vibrato, as if she picked up the steel naturally and hasn't had a lot of tutoring. Remarkable.

I told her, she said "She don't feel using it yet, but I encourage her to do so." thank you for your suggestion

It warms my heart to see young ones take up any instrument, especially difficult ones like pedal steel. It's obvious she's been paying attention to her lessons. I concur with the suggestion that she be introduced to finger picks. If you/she decides to go that direction there's a forum member offering child sized picks right now. Here's a link to his post:

Aside from wearing off skin (lol) and possibly causing a lack of sensitivity in her fingertips over time, going from "no picks" to wearing picks might be a bit of an adjustment. The sound will be different, the attack on the strings, the feel of picks raised up higher, wrist position...

I would prefer to break the habit as soon as possible, so I could stay on track with my progress. Of course, being a youngster, she will adapt fast, as younger folks don't have quite as much of an issue relearning things as an older person does.

I'm not criticizing her in the least, only making an observation. She does good, makes that Zum sing! Smile

Great Start! Get her some small picks from Jerry. He has kids and ladies size. She needs to learn with picks. She's gonna be a monster! http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=312759

She has great talent, but I would advise to find a teacher. The tone she gets without wearing pick is very nice, but the bar hand technique needs some attention. I know her hands are small, but try holding the bar better with the fingers left of to it on the strings. When sliding, keep the bar straight. She'll be great

If I could offer one suggestion, it would be to work on the left hand movement.
Twisting the bar while sliding up and down the neck makes anyone sound out of tune.

Work on holding the bar straight in line with the fret markers.

You are doing great.
