OH Wow; that's a 1976 Pro~III Custom with headstocks that were only made for Lloyd Green's first LDG Model.
That is extremely rare. Damir do you have any history on this particular Sho~bud? who was it originally made for??
Did they lengthen the scale with keyhead placement to 24 1/2" scale or put the keyhead rollers at 24" scale??(oh wait; I can see now the room behind short keyheads to endplate...so those rollers are at the regular place end of neck)....way cool.

Ricky, I had this guitar for so long I can’t even remember where do I got it, or from who, it was probably some kind of trade deal.... unfortunately I don’t know any history on this one, only thing I know is that those are short keyheads, and not a regular ones... before I got this guitar I didn’t know Sho Bud SKH even existed ... _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

The Short Keyhead did NOT exist. Lloyd Green didn't like the Overtones that happened behind the keyhead rollers to the tuning keys. Sho~bud(I'm not saying names) decided it was because of the length from the rollers to the tuning key posts....so the experimented and made a shorter one and put it on Lloyds LDG; but so the end of that shorter keyhead was at end of top at endplate...So it made Lloyd's scale 1/2 longer that any Sho~bud....and it FIXED the overtones....and of course Lloyd loves that LDG so much still; he plays only that first one ever made...yeeehaaa ......there ya go; the story from the Man himself...that nobody else really knows.
So there's your rare history lesson today....but that short key head was NEVER made for any regular Sho~bud made; so that's what it is indeed extremely rare this Pro~III had two of them on it. I can kinda figure how this happened....but "kinda figuring" is not my place...when Harry Jackson and Paul Franklin Sr. are still alive and probably know....but I ain't asking them..ha.

Well Dang, I thought I had the only one of these on the planet, I guess not! The one I have was made for Richmond VA Sho-Bud dealer Ray Garrett the manager of Metro Music on Hull Street in the mid 70's. It is also green but has a 24 3/8" inch scale believe it or not as well as extremely hot pickups, 24 ohm I think and it is one of the earlier Pro IIIs with wide pedals.
Being only about 2 hours from Burlington NC almost everybody in Richmond played Emmons guitars and I am sure ribbed Ray about that. I can picture him telling Shot he wanted a guitar with a longer scale than Emmons with hotter pickups. It also has a tone control for the C6 neck to roll off some highs, Ray was a huge Chalker fan and a very good player I should add.
I'll post some pics of it after the first of the year.

Ricky,
I have one of the short keyhead Sho Buds with the 25-1/2" scale. I think it is the one my friend Jack is referring to because he has done some work on it for me. I thought one reason for the short keyhead was to reduce string breakage and this one very seldom breaks a string. It is a D-10 and is the best sounding Sho Bud I have ever heard. |

Yes "SHO~BUD" was truly a "Custom" shop; meaning, they would build a sho~bud the way the customer would order/spec. it.
I don't know the history behind who wanted and got made; the short keyhead; only the history of what happened with Lloyd Green's first LDG; as he told it to me and what I posted. Sure other guitars could have gotten a short-keyhead if the customer wanted something in particular to happen...as at that time; they built the casting and so they had that specific Cast to make that size.;
But I have only seen Lloyd's in person; but never seen one on any other Sho~bud until this one Damir came up with. AS why I think it is severely rare...ha...

Way cool Billy; and hey Jack; is that the one Billy is talking about?? 25 1/2 scale?? And I highly doubt a longer scale(no matter the keyhead size) cuts down on string breakage..ha...the longer the scale; the more tension on the same guage for a shorter scale.
Hey Damir; just for grins....measure that scale on this pro III> please.

I am wondering if they simply had a few short keyheads laying around, realized they needed to be used up, and simply installed them on a production guitar instead of having something lay around unused, thats already been paid for... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

I know of a red LDG up in Canada that's actually the way less desirable triple raise double lower, and it has the SKH and it screams with Tone. |

Ricky, This quote by Lloyd Green was posted on the forum a few years ago and is the reason I thought string breakage was the main reason for the short keyhead. My Bud is definitely a 24-1/2 inch scale.
Quote: |
"Some of the first Sho-Bud LDGs were built with a....241/2 inch scale. I have no reason why. Anyway, mine immediately started breaking 3rd strings.
After less than a week of this nonsense, and my complaints, I was informed of the scale length and rather than accept another steel I asked Shot if there was any solution. He had David Jackson or Paul Franklin, Sr. replace the key head with a shorter one. Problem solved.
The imprint from the original key head is still clearly visible on my steel. They quickly returned to the 24" scale and regular keyhead for production."
"However, the scale on my LDG still measures...241/2 inches."

I've seen a few Buds of that vintage with the short keyheads. I asked David Jackson about it once and he didn't know anything about it, saying they never made them.
They clearly made a few of them, certainly on a custom order basis, but I wasn't about to argue the point with him.
