I was perusing... ok, I was ogling the Zums at the new Zum website and saw something that piqued my curiosity. Rand Anderson and Tony Rankin have pictures posted which kind of look like laquer guitars. Additionally there is someone with a new black D10 which looks like it has MOP inlaid across the front with one line at the top and one on the bottom.
So.. Are those lacquer guitars? I'm guessing the Black D10 is a mica with simulated MOP?

Steve,
I do have two lacquer SD10's. One is blue and the other is sunburst. Bruce has made a few, but last September told me he is no longer offering to build them. However, Bruce is putting the MOP stripes on mica guitars. He also has some other nice designs incorporating the MOP.

Steve, I have a blue lacquer D-10 Zum and a black mica D-10 Zum with the MoP on the front. Bruce told me that he wouldn't build anymore lacquer guitars, but you just never know. I think the black one sounds better though. I have a friend who just got a digital camera so hopefully I can post some pictures.

I wish i had a laquer zum. The laquer sure travel easier. Tony has a beautiful pair of laquers. My zum is a birdseye maple mica. I also have a blue SDU12 but it is mica as well. I am hoping to get a laquer hybrid changer zum made one of these days, if bruce is willing. |

Interestingly, Bruce prefers the sound of a mica guitar over lacquer. I'll find out which I like best when my new Hybrid D10 is finished.
Rand,
I think that birdseye maple mica you have looks great. I almost went with that on the new one.
I'm not sure I would agree with you about the travel qualities of lacquer over mica. I say that because lacquer is so much more easily damaged than mica. I cringe when people are moving mic stands, etc., around my guitars while they are on stage. |

I have a picture of my two Zums on the Zumsteel website. One is Mica and the other one is lacquer. Bruce told me he can build four mica ones in the time it takes to do one lacquer one. He said last fall that he will do no more lacquer ones because he is far behind and would like to get back on schedule. I got in just under the wire. Ron |

I've got my Zum on that site as well. And there are some beautifull guitars on there. I've had mine a month now and am really happy with it. And that's coming from a guy who played push pulls for 25 years.
I've also got a couple pics of mine on my website and there is one on the mugshots page of Don Polands site. I'll put the links up.
