Hello, my name is Bob and I'm looking for some help on an issue I'm experiencing with excessive string breaking. I started on a Carter Starter and was quite surprised with the quality. I don't think I replaced more than 2 strings in an 18 month period. Since the quality and sound impressed me I recently purchased a Carter pro model (s-10).
The pro model is definitely a superior product however, I'm experiencing excessive string breaking especially the high G# 11 gauge.
I've studied and practiced the suggestions offered on the steelguitarinfo.com web site as well as following the suggestions in the manual and video that came with the guitar but still no joy. When the string breaks, I can literally go through a half of dozen strings before I get one that will last a few days. I recently ordered two dozen 11-gauge strings from Carter thinking I may have had a bad batch but again no joy.
BTW, the string usually will not break until the B pedal is pressed a few times and I might add with no aggressiveness. Also, the string is very difficult to keep in tune. Whenever I am lucky enough to enjoy a period of time where the string doesn't break, it usually takes a couple of days before it will stay in tune.
I have lubed the under carriage as suggested but haven't removed all the strings to lube it. Would you recommend that? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Where does it break?
This is not normal. I play Carters and don't experience this problem. There will be a solution. |

I ordered some Rayline strings from mr Bill Ray in florida,,not whole sets just 3rds and 5ths,,been getting alot more milage on my legrands,,,lasts longer than any strings that i have found,

Hi and thanks for your response. I'm happy to hear that you're not experiencing this on your Carter. I was starting to lose faith!
Will The breaks usually happen on the far right side (pull area) but there have been a number of occations where it breaks up around the key area.

Bob,
This is the very reason I got rid of mine, although I did stop some of it by taking a brillo pad and rubbing the changer it still would eat three strings before I could get one to stay, to top it off the 10th string started doing it. I tried to get help from carter but all they done was mouth me off and give me a hard time, when I ask if the changer could be bad the responce was no way there changers dont do that, so I got tired of it and sold it, and after that experence I have never set my eye on another one. |
