Hi guys,
I came across this on Youtube by the Florida Boys Quartet, that features some great steel playing on it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK-biB_xZAY
Perhaps it is Weldon Myrick's steel work on this one?
I have admired this playing for a few years now and have these old recordings on LP, This particular one was from an album called "First Class Gospel". During this time period, they feature plenty of steel fills, and intros etc.
Let me know your thoughts

Wow, I love the steel in this song but also the singer! He sounds a lot like Jimmy Fortune. IMO

Hi guys, Erv; that is right what a great way to do it too!
Jerry, yes it is a real beaut this one, and I too, very much like the singer here, and all the singers involved. The soloist's name is Laddie Cain I believe. He sure has a great voice.
Hi Dale, you are certainly welcome, I was sure there would be folks that would enjoy this, it has such a stirring message to it; the singers, and the steel are spot on. It would be great for you to do this song, I would love to hear your rendition of it!

I just ordered a song book off the internet that contains this song. When I receive it, I will be tabbing it out.
When I get it done I will send it out to whom ever requests it. |

I have bad news for those waiting for the tab for this song. I placed an order for the song book containing the song and just learned that it's not available.
I'll keep looking but it doesn't look good. |

I believe that I have some good news!
I have a hymnal on order that, by all indications, contains the song we are looking for.
I should know in a week! |

Erv, I would love to have a copy if you get that done. I have always liked everything I have gotten from you.
And, thanks Marcus. Another good one you've given us. Even the picture of that little church in the woods was awesome. |

That is indeed great news Erv!
You are welcome Mark, I'm glad to have come across it and then be able to share my findings here with you all. They sure did a nice job of the video, I also liked that picture they used in it.

Erv, I have a geniunly ignorant question. I don't write tab and struggle to even read it. Why is sheet music required to tab out the song? Why would you not work out the melody by ear and then write it out after refining your arrangement?
Nice playing by Weldon or someone. I didn't catch enough signature sound to say that is him or anyone else. YMMV.

Bill,
I like to tab off sheet music and especially sheet music with the bass clef in addition to the treble clef.
There are very few ear players who can pick out all the chords in a complex song by ear. If you just want to play single string melodies, you will do fine.
However, my style of playing is "chordal melody" and I need to see the sheet music to pick up on the augmented, diminished, 9th's and other misc. chords
If you are playing an old 3 chord country song that's a different matter.
In fact, I got together with my guitar player last night and we were going over some songs for a wedding we are going to be playing and a bass player showed up. He only plays by ear and on some of the songs he just had to give up, he was lost.

Well, fellow steelers, this is your lucky day.
I received the hymnal and, praise the Lord, it contained the song we were looking for.
Let me give you a little background as to the writer of this song: Marijohn Wilkin.
She was a very prolific song writer and wrote many songs including the following:
Waterloo
The Long Black Veil
P.T. 109
and G.T.O.
However it wasn't until she finally came to the end of her rope, including trying to commit suicide on a couple of different occasions, that she turned to the Lord and started writing gospel music.
With the assistance of Kris Kristofferson, she wrote a song we're all familiar with: "One Day At A Time".
She died in 2006 at the age of 86.
I am putting some copies of the tab in the mail today for those who I have mailing addresses for.
Marcus,
I sent you an e-mail as I need your postal mailing address.
Thanks to all,
Erv
PS: If anyone else would like to play this great old gospel song, just let me know and it would pleasure me no end to send you a copy. |
