My 400 starts out good but as I play it starts goin out like I have a bad cord or speaker is goin out! You can tap on top of the amp and it clears up but then starts goin out again! Any ideas what I should look for? It does have the fox mode chips in it thought about putting the originals back in. _________________ JDAWG

Jeremy..May be an indication of dirty input and output jacks. If unused, the contacts become dirty or oxidation occurs causing an intermittent interruption in the signal path.. I would suggest using 'Deoxit' (green can, the type that contains cleaner AND lube) to clean ALL (including any on the rear panel) jacks on the amp. The best method would be to remove the chassis and spray the Deoxit directly on the contacts but spraying the solution into the opening and then inserting and removing a 1/4" plug five or six times may help solve the problem. |

Take some short cords and plug between the loop jacks... on that amp there's two loops, one on the front panel for the volume pedal, and one on the back panel for the rack effects. The jacks get dirty and corroded, and the signal has to pass through them when they're not used. Common problem on PV's. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

as stated, it's time for simple maintenance. If you're up for it, pull the chassis, clean all the PC bd connectors with an electronics spray and a soft brush, don't worry the stuff will dry in a minute or so. Both sides of the connectors, PC bd end and molex ( plug ) end. Don't forget the reverb connector, easy to miss as it is on the very bottom of the chassis.
Burnish (scrape clean) each of the 1/4 jacks, ground and tip , ( very small fine file) spray clean them as well and if you do all this the amp will amazingly start working again and will for many more years.
This is not a problem but rather maintenance. It's very common with these PV amps. Not a big deal. _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

While you have the circuit board out pay close attention to the speaker pins-to circuit board solder joints. I've had to re-solder these on several Peavey amps. Also all the Other suggestions and recommendations are spot on. Good amps, but takes some occasional TLC. |
