I had to pull my JBL from my fave open back cabinet (I needed a high power speaker for this rig) and the only thing left in the house is a closed back box. I've never much cared for closed cabs but one benefit might be more power handling before it blows.

I'll buy a new cab if necessary but I'd like to hear:

Is a closed cabinet somewhat counter to the special sound of a D130? Or in fact is it optimal? (skeptical)

What experiences do you have?

Jon, D130F’s are what were originally put in my Closed back 1964 Dual Showman... These are tremendous amps that absolutely rock.... Rick Johnson would be a good one to ask as well... Not only does he make exceptional cabinets himself, he knows and loves Fender amps and these speakers.

Good call, Dale. I totally forgot this whole line of cabs. Let us officially declare closed cabinets and D130's acceptable.

I forget--are Lloyd's twin green cabs open or closed-backed (and yes I think I know that they're K130's) ?

I have a '63 Standel Imperial with the "bass reflex" ported closed back cab with a JBL D130. Enormous clear sound from that amp.

Jon, I have no idea about Lloyd cabs... I bet Ricky Davis would... I just thought he used a Twin, and if it’s like the one I used have back when, it was open back.

He's got that Twin in a head cab and two speaker cabs--all in green tolex. I believe Ricky got himself the same rig. All Rick Johnson cabs. I've probably seen pics of the backs of them but I can't recall now.

I've gone ahead and mounted the D130 in a closed Marrs ultralight cab. Sounds excellent. I need to spend time getting accustomed to close backs. They scare me, compared to the more dispersed projection of an open cab. On an unmic'd bandstand I worry about exploding someone's head.

What you need is a tone ring cab, the best of both worlds.

Years ago I read up and got acquainted with tone ring cabs. Seems I've forgotten most of it. But yeah.

These are my homemade 15” and 12” plywood cabs. Open back cabs sound better to me. Closed backs are to boomy.
. You can take me out of Texas, but I’ve still got Texas in my Soul.

Jon
The cabinets I built for Lloyd and Ricky were
open back design.

I'm building a Bassman amp for my wife, and intended to build a tone ring to go with it, (and I probably still will later). I came across a Hartke 410 XL series cheap on CL, so I'll probably cover it to match the head for now.
(We went to a show a while back with 2 bands, both were playing through 2-810 Hartke bass cabs, and the sound was great!) She's never had 10's before, 15's 18's, 18 with a 12, might be fun to try.

I have a D130 in a closed back cab I bought off Carty Thomson (who I see has already chimed in) that sounds absolutely great.
