Here is one for Sierra guitar wizards. Can the pickups for a Crown model also be slid into the mounting of the Session model and vice versa? I have a Crown for sale and a Forumite asked this question. Thanks, steve t

Hi Steve. I believe that the only modification that Sierra ever did to the modular pickup design was to incorporate a 3rd contact to allow for the split pickups that were sometimes used. However the normal pickups worked fine in the 3 contact boot as well. Tom Baker would be the definitive source at Sierra.

The Sierra pickup slots came in various configurations - 2, 3 or 4 contacts. My Crown and Session models both had 3-contact slots. 2- or 3-contact pickups worked fine in both guitars.

The only incompatibility I've encountered was using a 3 contact pickup (Shields) in the 2-contact slot of my 1978 Sierra Olympic. It only received half of the signal.

Also, the strings are closer to the neck on the Olympic, so the spacing between the pickup and the strings is tighter. With the Shields pickups this isn't a big problem because they have adjustable pole pieces, but my TrueTone won't work in the Olympic - the strings touch the pickup.

Bottom line: the Session and Crown models are very compatible. The Olympic uses a similar slot, but the height is slightly different so you may have problems.
