A recent thread got me thinking --
Do mfgrs who build both 10 and 12 string pedal steels use different fingers for 10's compared to 12's?
A lot of folks I talk to tell me that string spacing is a problem when they try to switch between 10 and 12 strings. Is it just the two extra strings or is the spacing really different?

Thanks John -- that's kinda what I expected
Anyone else know if builders use different changer parts on a 12 string compared to a 10?
I had 12 and 10 string push-pulls and it FELT like the spacing was different. I didn't have a micrometer, but I didn't see much difference just using a ruler.
I'm just talking about spacing AT THE CHANGER.
Anyone else?

I doubt that most manufacturers use different fingers for the two! That would mean extra expense in tooling, and also stocking what's needed for builds/repairs. All the 12's that I've noticed seem like they just add two more fingers. It feels a lot different because some players, like myself, tend to feel the "home base" for your right hand on the bottom string.
However, a different spacing could be easily accomplished by making the fingers thin, and then just using different thickness washers or spacers between the fingers for 10, 12 and 14 string guitars! All that said, most guitars are pretty close to a "standard" spacing so they can employ many different pickups without looking "off kilter".
For 99% of the players, small differences between brands are moot. (You can get used to just about anything, given enough time. )
