With no PSG teachers in my area, I'm on the self taught road. I've got six months under my belt and to date have been working with Winnie Winston's book which has been a great help to me in understanding the basics. After reading some comments about Jeff Newman's "Right Hand Alpha" coarse, I purchased the DVD package recently and now understand why so many suggest this instructional package. It has been a great help to me. Jeff was a very good teacher and through his recordings still remains a great resource today. I have also been working with some of the great tips provided by Joe Wright on his website. Joe seems like a excellent teacher as well, but I have yet to purchase any of his programs. I now want to further invest in more instructional programs, but with so many comments on the forum about bad videos, I'm leaning towards staying with the Jeff Newman and/or Joe Wright. I'm intersted in your thoughts on which instructional videos from Jeff and/or Joe that you would recommend. |

In my view, you can't go wrong with any of Jeff Newman's videos. They are now on DVD, with the rhythm/steel tracks on CD, so the media are up-to-date. Depending on what stage your playing is, you might consider the "Bandstand Backup" or perhaps the "Up from the Top" series. The Web site gives descriptions of all the courses.
Cheers,

Please consider adding to your materials Buddy Emmons' Chord Vocabulary. I think it's less than $15, but it'll give you loads of information and support material to work on and with. At first it can be darn right overwhelming, but there's a lot there in a small package. |

Hey Jack, I would second the "Up From The Top" series by Jeff Newman as well. Alot of info in the courses. I just gotta figure out how he plays in those boots! [This message was edited by Stan Knowles on 04 June 2005 at 06:19 PM.] |

Thanks for your thoughts. The "Up From the Top" sounds like a good investment based on your comments and from what I've read. If it's anything like the "Right Hand Alpha" program I purchased, I guess I can't go wrong. |

What is your musical background, and what kind of goals do you have as a steel player?

I am six months also and agree about "Up from the Top." I have also enjoyed the Hag Bag and Jim Loessberg's 25 Ray Price intros and solos. In fact, I liked Jim's style so much I ordered a couple of his beginner courses. With a bunch of beginner books and CDs, I am sure I have too much stuff which may prevent working through a lesson series with dedication, but each bit adds a bit of knowledge and ways to practice. My resolution now is to go through Up from the Top AB D and F DVDs slowly rather than sampling which I did at first.

Thanks for the comment Dillon. I plan to take your advise and go step by step through "Up From The Top" when I receive it.
Travis, I have played drums in a few bands over the years, but currently play guitar in a three piece band. I have always wanted to learn PSG because I love the sound. My goal right now is to be able to use the PSG to back up the band on a couple numbers each set to add a new element of variety to our sound. Although someday I hope I can do many of the fancy licks, for now I'm just looking to pull off the basics.[This message was edited by Jack Latimer on 07 June 2005 at 11:46 AM.] |

I've never seen the Up From the Top stuff, but I've heard lots of good things about it. Personally, I think the best way to learn is to transcribe stuff you'd like to play off records. It's the short, hard path, but you've already got some musical experience.
The courses you take and books you read will help give you the tools to do that, so they're still very useful, but second to having a quality teacher in person, transcribing stuff is the best thing, in my opinion.
Remember that you don't have to transcribe the hard stuff. Once you've learned enough about your instrument that you sort of have an idea of how it gets its sounds, you can pick and choose the stuff you think might be within your reach.
