Some pedal steels have wider spacing between pedals.
The early Emmons p/p's had wider spacing and I believe the early Sho~Buds did also.

I have played for about 35 years with no shoes at all. I just wear a sock on my left foot. Right foot I sometimes use a shoe. I could never get the feel with a shoe. I have met a few guys over the years that play with no shoes also. I remember seeing Sarah Jory playing with high heels!!!!!

The only thing with no shoes, in this case.....

For a diabetic, it might not be the most comfortable thing, with the foot problems they can have.
