Hmmmm coming through amp

This one has me stumped playing through a Nashville 400 through a Profex 2 through a Goodrich Volume pedal w/new pot. Moved the amp back about 8 feet, plugged into the low side. When I mash the volume pedal over halfway I get a low hum not like a short. It's like the volume is turned too high. I can turn the volume down and it will quit but then the volume is too low. Believe it's in the Profex because when I bypass the Profex the sound goes away but doesn't sound nearly as good either. Any ideas on how to set the Profex? Or, what could be wrong with the Profex or could it be another problem?
