I've been breaking my new S-10D Carter the last week or so. I play "Night Life" on my D-10 Carter on the C6th without any problems. Does anybody play this song on the standard E9th and get close to the chord phrasings that are on the C6th?

Yeah, I think Koos Biel did that years ago, when he learned the entire Black Album on E9 cuz he didn't know that there even was as C6 tuning!

Hey Billy, I went to a Jeff Newman Seminar in California in '78 where he showed us how to do Nightlife. There are a couple of ways to do it but for the best sounding one (IMHO) you'll have to be able to lower your 9th string D to C# and also lower strings 5 & 10 B to Bb. For the 1st voicing in the key of D slide chromatically on your 4th string from the 2nd fret to the 5th fret. When you get to the 5th fret play strings 4, 5, and 9 with the 9th string lowered a half tone to C# and you'll hear it. You can do a lot of C6th sounding things with those 3 strings with the 9th lowered.......JH in Va.

Billy, I've got Jeff Newmans tab on it somewhere around here. The next time your over I'll give you a copy of it.. Or if there's anyone else on the forum that wants it I could scan it and post it. Its pretty close but misses the deep bass lines.

I remember Roger Rettig putting up some tab for the intro in E9 a couple of years ago, it was very useful.

Excuse the shameless self-promotion , but I've got this tune tabbed out in my Swinging On E9 course, available from me or b0b. Click on the link above that says "Instruction."

Cool. But who's idea was it to bury it in a swing course?

Here is an interpretation of the intro minus the pick up notes between the chord gripes. This should get you going as you place your order from guys who have the tune laid out fully in tab.

1-----------------------------------
2-----------------------------------
3-----------------------------------
4---5--------4R-----5------4R---
5---5--------4----------------------
6------------------ 5R-----4R---
7-----------------------------------
8-----------------------------------
9---9L-------9L---------------------
10------------------10-----10----

An after thought, you may substitute the 3rd chord with the following

1---------------------------------------
2--------------------------------------
3-------------------------------------
4-------------------------------------
5---------8RR----------------------------
6---------8R----------------------------
7-------------------------------------
8--------------------------------------
9---------8-----------------------------
10--------------------------------------

Jim I didn't think of that. I spoke with Fran about some stuff [via email] and at that point in time she was still trying to decide exactly what she was going to do. I could tab it myself and post it but I play it a little different [but pretty close] to what he has it tabbed. I won't post though. I don't mind paying the royalty for anyone that wants to download it becuase it couldn't be that much but I don't know how to go about that.

Folks; I've seen Herb's tab on this and the main Song also and it is PERFECT on E9th and you get so much more stuff with that package....>so Learn Night life and all the cool swing stuff on E9th from a guy that KNOWS swing on C6th; but now offers it up on E9th>> http://pedalsteelmusic.com/instruction/herbsteiner.html
Herb is too modest to further his "shameless plug" So I will.
It's great man> get it and never look back.

That's what music is all about. Different styles with different taste. I think I'm going to get a copy of each of the versions of the NL song. I like to play songs a little different sometimes that just the same old licks, etc. I think I'm going to work on Four Wheel Drive on the E9th after this. Thanks to EVERYONE for your comments and help on NL!

Our own MHOF guy Jerry Hendrix has a great version of Night life on E9.

He is doing those C6 songs on E9 so he wont have to carry that heavier D10.

I have heard some of his C6 on E9 stuff and does a great job on them......al

I've been playing Night Life on E9 for about 20 years. About 10 years ago I switched to EMaj9 (sometimes called "expanded E9"); the 9th string lower to C# became a non-issue because I now raise the "new" 9th string to C#. Aside from all of that, about all I miss is the "Boo-Wah" effect found on p8 of a standard double-neck. I confess that with a Thumbpick and 3 finger picks, some of the grips are a bit awkward, even after all this time.

Gary Lee - Those are some difficult looking slants in your first example, above. How long is the bar you are using?
