I'm currently building a rack unit and I'm curious as to what everyone is using for power amps these days. I'm looking at the Crown XTI 1002. Has anyone ever used one?

Erv is right. I've used a number of high end power amps but this particular Fryette 2902 is without a doubt the best I've ever used.

I am using a couple of the older Stewart 1/2 rack space PA-xxx models.

While not the most powerful amps, they sound very nice, are small and compact in size, reasonable price on the used market.

The IPRII3000 is ideal for any steel guitar application. At 520 watts at 8 ohms, 950 watts at 4 ohms. Weighing in 8.16lbs.. The future is here!

I thought that Fryette looked familiar...so it's the same amp as the VHT's?

I see they offer the higher powered 2/90/2 still also.
All tube power [at about the same 35# weight as our old MosValve power amps that are still going strong].

I saw on older Mesa Boogie V-Twin Rack preamp on one of the auction sites for about 300 bucks too. Bet that would make for a fine pairing.

Paddy, the Telonics 4200 power amp doesn't list output power...do you know what that is?
Looks like a lot of features there at just over 5#...must be Class D amp?
All their stuff appears to be really nice.

Sorry to butt in here Austin, but I'm still considering rack upgrades too.

All due respect to MB and others, I don't think all power amps are created equal though. While any amp with the appropriate output levels will absolutely drive all the associated steel gear components, an amp designed for PA use may not be a good candidate for guitar/steel guitar.

Amps like the old BK Butler MosValve 500 were designed to have a more musical quality for guitar. It may be that you need a little something more than just raw power.

That makes units like the VHT, Fryette, Telonics and the old MV amps like I'm still using, and other such amplifiers, more desirable for your steel guitar component rack rig. Food for thought.

Jerry, I didn't take that into consideration! I'm still learning about the technical side of power amps, so that's why I'm fortunate to have forumites to help me out!

It was just an observation. OTOH, a steel amp probably needs more clean power than a rock amp for guitar, so the IPR suggested by MB and some of the others mentioned would certainly give you that.

BTW, looks like you're playing an Evans in some of the Cody videos....sounds great.

I've used & still use ( on occasion ) an older Samson 802 single space, 400W per channel into a 4Ohm. And roughly 240W into 8Ohm per channel..

Nice, light weight clean rack mount amp.
