I would like to know everyone's opinions on their fav instructional books. I have seen some here and there, but nothing jumps out at me. Well, the E9 Neil Flanz book jumps out at me because I am a fan. Anyone have experience with his books?
I will be taking occassional lessons from Russ Wever, and I would like some other books to provide other perspectives and styles in between those lessons.
Thanks all,
Jason |

Hey neighbor,
I have the following books:
Deluxe Pedal Steel E9th - Dewitt Scott (especially good if you want to read notes besides tabature. A good foundation and a disciplined structure to slowly introduce you to each pedal. Good format with the standard musical notation above the tab).
Steel Guitar Anthology -Dewitt Scott (provides some branching out with mixture of beginner to advanced stuff)
Neil Flanz's E9th - nice fun supplement to mix-in with the other courses. A classic.
Herb Steiner - Swinging on E9th - (real fun, plus some really cool material giving a more retro sound)
Winnie Winston's Pedal Steel (Excellent, as everyone can attest).
Of these above books I consider Winnie's and Dewitt Scott's Deluxe Method, the more thorough and geared toward the beginner in terms of learning the fundamentals. But, I don't think it hurts to have a selection of other books also especially in terms of having some outlets to try different stuff.
I did not buy these all at once, maybe every few months I buy something else. I've got my hands pretty full right now.
Let me know how your lessons go. I could probably use some myself.

Any of Jeff Newman's stuff is great, IMO. His videos (I think they're all on DVD now, actually) "Pedal Steel Guitar Techniques" and "The Right Hand Alpha" are aimed at beginners. They use split-screen techniques, so you can see both hands and feet. 1 800 373 3418 www.jeffran.com

Joe Wrights Technic Bundle is the best thing in the world to learn as warm ups and realy get you going on the right track in the technic world. cause to me it steel playing is a lot more than when to play the notes but how to play the notes too.

I've had some learning and listening pleasure from Paul Franklin's instructional cassettes. He pretty much talks you through and he is very clear and articulate.

Jason, these guys have all given great advice. You really should plan on coming to Baxter Springs, KS on May 1st for the KSGA monthly meeting. I have most of the books mentioned, I still use them, but you would be welcome to look at them. We are just a big family of steel pickers who love to get together and help one another. It's just about 2-2 1/2 hours straight south of you.
