A very good friend of mine wanted me to take the green finish off his late model Lloyd Green Sho-Bud and put a natural finish on. Below are the before and after photos.

Aw, beautiful, Leon. Old faded LDG green is not my favorite look. That is one fine looking guitar now.

Great job. Was the original green dye applied to the surface of the maple and had to be sanded off, or was it mixed in with the clear?

Jim, some sanding was required to do away with all the green, but not as much as you would think. I had to brush some bleach on a couple of stubborn places. Great care must be taken when sanding the front because the inlay is much softer than the maple. Thanks for the compliments guys. I love taking an old Sho-Bud and making it shine again.

Very nice indeed. I like the light colored pad. I guess now it's a LDNatural. Green seems to be a hard color to keep from fading. I've seen a lot of nice guitars mostly Sho-Bud and MSA that faded.

That's a remarkable improvement...just beautiful. I have strong dislike of green guitars. Now it's the same color as the old Sho-Bud 'The Professional' I sold last year but it obviously has a much higher quality finish than I managed when I did mine over. Nice choice for the pad color too...really sets it off.

Leon,

This is a really awesome guitar. But maybe its my eyes but the right side of the apron still looks slightly green.

tbHenry, you have good eyes. That spot is a dis-coloration in the grain. It looks more yellow with just a hint of green to the naked eye. I don't think more sanding would have taken this out. The two pieces of inlay dictates how much sanding you can do on the front apron. The owner is happy with the results. I told him going in that getting all the stain removed would be difficult. He told me to do what I could. What you see is the best I could do. Thanks again for the positive comments.

Leon, This certainly is not a negative post as I didn't even notice the "spot" as you describe so I went back and looked at original color and see that the green also has a "dark spot" in that area meaning that it is probably a soft spot in the grain which allowed more stain to penetrate and you're right you couldn't get it out.I'm kinda detail oriented but I hadn't noticed that, however,I'd still have to stamp it "EXCELLANT"! The natural looks excellent but I still like the green better. (It just ain't an LDG to me if it ain't green.)

There is another current thread regarding refinishing a maple guitar. You guys should talk...

Mark, since you like the green LDGs, here's one for you that we refurbished about four years ago for Doug Meyer in San Diego. This was my first effort and Albert Johnson gave me a lot of assistance on this. The LDG decals were easy to come by in those days.
