Anybody who works on push-pulls,can tell you that one of the biggest PITA about making tuning changes can be having to remove or add bell-cranks. Often, it involves loosening up other bell cranks and removing a cross-shaft or brackets.
So a couple of years ago, I came across some slip-on 2-piece bell cranks made by Clem Schmitz. They were a bit spendy, but I bought a couple and eventually threw them in my Emmons parts drawer for future use.
Today, I decided to put one of them to the test. I wanted to add a C6th 3rd string half step raise to my LKL (which already lowers the E9th 2nd string to C# via half stop and the 9th string D to C#). I pulled the collars off the C 6h 3rd string pull-rod and backed it off of the changer and then slipped on Clem's bell-crank.
The bell crank consists of an open slot with a removable endplate. You just loosen two 6-32 button screws and remove the plate, to allow the bell crank to slide onto the cross-shaft from the back. Then it's a simple matter to re-attach the plate and tighten the screws once the crank is positioned. After re rodding and tightening/setting all the 3rd string pul rod collars, it was finished. 15 min to make the entire change.
Pretty cool device............if it holds up!

Clem wrote the book on Emmons push pull maintenance ! He has helped me keep my guitars on the road for years now.

A thumbs up from me for Clem's innovative clip-on bell cranks. I bought some of these and they are a boon to anyone who need to put additional raises or lowers on their set up. Great timesavers.

The small plate would be an easy place to drill & tap a hole fpr pinning the shaft, for anti rotation problems.

| On a pp cross rod there is no problem w/ rotation due to the rod being flattened where the plate will be. Clems´ bellcrank is supposed to be an easy to attach part - made to make copedent changes easy on a pp. |
