he was primarily doing pop/rock/country sessions in addition to touring as Roger Miller's bassist for awhile, but he did do sessions with Ray Charles and Henry Mancini as well as recording the Black Album and more. and he was always playing jazz, he's Buddy freakin' Emmons! _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

I don't think Buddy considered himself on the same level as the heavy jazz cats, as much as we might disagree with him.
you can bet there were many jam sessions during those years, and much jazz exploration by the Big E, but I don't think Buddy surrounded himself with strictly jazz musicians or recorded any strictly jazz sessions.
though I would sure love to be proven wrong. _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

He recorded with Ray Charles in tha era. Check Feel so bad. I heard he used the old trick of pulling out one of the 6L6's from his twin to get the distortion effect. |

I can't say if he used it on everything but I've been told by a few people who worked with him back then he was using a Twin with JBL's. |

I use to see Buddy play most every Tue. night at the Sundance Saloon in Calabasas with Don Everley fronting the band in the early 70's.
During that timeframe is when I saw him using the proto-type of the Peavey Session 400 w/15" JBL.
It had masking tape on the face of the amp with all the numbers and functions written in black marker pen ink.
When I ask him "what is that amp?", his reply was "your next amp". My 74 Session 400 is sitting in my studio to this day!

great story Jim! and how lucky you were to catch him in that setting on a weekly basis.
pretty sure Buddy was back in Nashville before he really got bit by the Martino bug. _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

That's right, Jim. I remember seeing him there. Lighting a cigarette and holding the match in front of his speaker and blowing it out by thumping the lowest string on the C6 neck. That was later, closer to when he moved back to Nashville. |
