I recorded this interview with luthier Carroll Benoit about ten years ago for a Fretboard Journal article that never ran. Carroll is now retired. His guitars are meticulous, beautiful and feature the finest woods and components. In addition, Carroll is a man of old school warmth, integrity and pride. Enjoy this unedited conversation. Sorry about the low-fi phone audio quality. I probably should have run it through an EQ/noise gate but didn't. Maybe I will. The edited version appears in my Guitar Dreams book.

I remember Howard R from NYC owned several Benoit resonators. I own two, having just picked my second one up at a guitar store near Washington DC.
They are truly beautiful great sounding instruments!
Any other Benoit owners around? _________________ Sierra S10 (three!), Peavey 112 and 115, Benoit dobro, Beard Model E dobro, Beard Roadophonic, MSA Superslide, Dean Nickless custom dobro |

I sold mine a few years back pretty reluctantly. It was a great guitar and I loved the colors of the wood and the impeccable craftsmanship but in all honesty, I get most of the Dobro jolt of happiness I need from the $300 Gretsch I have now. It's the relationship with Carroll I value much more than the guitar. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Carroll & Anita are fine human beings. He and I did the Dobro seminars at the TSGA for a few years.
I really miss those folks. I talk to him from time to time. He's building a harpsichord..just because he can.

Carroll was at the St. Louis convention one year. I had the pleasure of visiting with him for quite a while and play his instruments. Mighty fine sounding and playing they are. He was very accommodating and let me pick as many and as long as I wanted except the ones he had marked sold, understandably.
I don't remember the year, but Buddy Emmons was opening the show and I nearly missed that by being so absorbed in the Benoit Resonator guitars. I wasn't in a place that I could afford one of his instruments at that time, but I would have if it were possible.
Interesting reading there Andy. |
