In spite of having what I think are fine sounding instruments, I went ahead and bought a Matchbox 7A,

meaning...

I bought tone... Smile

or maybe "more tone "

I recall seeing E play several times in the 70's thru the 80's, guess what he had stuck to the leg of his Steel ...

I went to band rehearsal and just plugged into the amp and played a while. Then I put my 7A in-line. The drummer looked across the room and chuckled and asked me what just changed, why my steel sounded so much better? The drummer.

It says, "tone," right there in black and white!

Here's a curious thing. I have a 6a: works fine. I picked up a 7a, had some issues, but thanks to my buddy Bruce Derr, it now works fine too.

But:

The Gain knob on the 6a is pretty much a straight volume control. Set at 1 (full "off") it takes the volume down to almost nothing. By contrast, the Gain on the 7a acts like a true gain control, boosting and (when turned up very high) over driving the signal a bit. Set at 1 it does not cut the volume appreciably. Which is the correct functioning "Gain" knob? For what it's worth, there is a whole lot more under the hood of the 7a (not just the extra parts needed for the on off switch).

Curious.

Tony, you must be a much better player than me. I see you have the "Tone" knob set at only 7. My tone is so bad, I'd have to crank it all the way to the max: 9! GIVE ME MORE TONE!

"Tone is in the hands". I'll bet you used your hands to turn the knobs on that device!

I've got a 7A that I bought from an estate sale. Its for sale. I don't really need it as I have one of the original MatchBro's with basically a Matchbox and tone control in the "Dobro" bypass position.

It just cut my power noticeably. Tried new batteries, new cables, etc. It did alter the tone a bit but the drastic power loss was unacceptable.

I would send your unit back to Goodrich, I have used a Matchbox for years and never experienced a power loss.
