I retrieved an old 1958 Supro Airliner 6 lap steel that my brother and I both learned to play on. I replaced the tuner buttons and strung her up, and the thing sounds great - all but the third string. The pickup isn't picking up the sound of the string. The string rings clear acoustically, but no sound comes through the pickup...just the one string.
This is one of the string-through Supro pickups. Can these be re-wound? It sounds great otherwise, maybe a little inconsistant volume-wise from string to string.
I'd appreciate any insight anyone might have. |

If it's just the one string it's more than likely the pole piece. Raising it up may bring the volume in line with the others. But be careful! These can be fragile and if it's seized up they break fairly easily. There is a recent thread about one breaking.
... before doing that you might try replacing that string. _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

Thanks for the tip. I removed the plate that's over the strings and the pole pieces all move freely and are similar height. Interestingly, when the cover plate is off all the strings sound equally. There are magnets at the top and bottom of the pickup that are held in place by the cover screws and when I turned the magnets upside down and put the plate back on the 5th string doesn't sound through the the pickup.
I suspect this has something to do with the tension of the plate covering the strings...the four screws are not all the same and one doesn't grab, it spins freely. I know which ones are original, I'll swing by Lowe's tomorrow to see if I can find more like the original.
This thing sounds really good, though. |
