In prepartion for receiving my first Pedal Steel, I wanted to study the copedant for the setup I will have but I'm confused. I have searched the archives to no avail so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. My guitar will be set up with a 12 string Universal E9/B6 tuning and the Day set-up. 8x5.
I see a lot of copedant's on forum for Universal E9/B6, so I know the basic tuning, but I dont' know what each lever and pedal does for the Day setup and every chart I've looked at is slightly different. If anyone can point me to the right chart, it would be most appreciated. thanks. |

Bill. Go to the Jeffran College website. Jeff has a chart showing the setup. He also produced a video explaining the pedals and knee levers on the U 12 E9/B6. Jeff played the Day setup. I believe it is the best way to go with the E9/B6. Good luck |

Hey Bill, you must know that the only dumb questions are the ones that you never ask.

And sometimes asking the wrong question gets you the right answer you never though you needed!!
Hey, it's happened to me before!
Regarding your specific question, If you don't have the particular set up for the guitar you will be recieving, then there's no really RIGHT chart except the one for your specific steel.
In any case, the Universal copedant on the Jeffran site is the standard one. (excluding the day vs. emmons issue)...
You can probably ask the person selling you the guitar to send you a copy of the copedant, and then just compare it to the ones you find on the web.
I hope this answers your question.

I'm confused, too. > Have you already ordered your steel? Are you getting a "stock" setup?
"I have searched the archives to no avail so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it."
There is no specific "right direction." There are quite a few variants of the U12 E9/B6. You need to decide how you want it set up.
"My guitar will be set up with a 12 string Universal E9/B6 tuning and the Day set-up. 8x5. I see a lot of copedant's on forum for Universal E9/B6, so I know the basic tuning, but I dont' know what each lever and pedal does for the Day setup and every chart I've looked at is slightly different. The "Day setup" just refers to the placement of the "Nashville" ABC pedals, which are set up CBA in the Day, as opposed to ABC in the "Emmons" setup. Most of the variations in U12 copedents involve the levers. For example, the Carter Web site, under their "Most requested tunings" section, shows:
LKL: lower 2, raise 9 to D
LKV: lower 5 to Bb
LKR: lower 6 to F#, raise 1 to G
RKL: raise 4, 8, 11 to F
RKR: lower 4, 8 to D#, 2 to C#
Also, their tuning has only 7 pedals, skipping the traditional C6 pedal 4, raising 4 and 8 to B.
I believe that any builder will "build to suit," i.e. you can have whatever tuning you want. If you are in the process of ordering your guitar, you need to think about what changes you want, perhaps get lots of conflicting advice from Forumites > and order the setup you decide upon.
Of course, on most guitars you can make changes later.

Alan,
To answer your question, I bought the MSA Millennium demonstrator steel listed on their site. So there was no wait time. Johnny Cox called to ask me how I wanted it set up, and since I've never played one, they set it up as a Universal tuning with the Day setup. It should be shipped out today or tomorrow. I'm sure I'll figure it out once it arrives, but maybe I'll just write Johnny and find out. |

Jeff Newman also published a cassette and tab course on the B6 end of the E9/B6. I believe it is still available from Jeffran. |

Surely they're not going to send you a guitar without a chart that tells you how it's tuned and set up, are they? Presumably, you'll get some documentation with the guitar that shows the tuning. Then you can post it and get a whole bunch of conflicting advice on how to change it. >:-)
I have the Newman E9/B6 course, and it's very useful, but your setup may not be the same, so you may have to adjust to his tab.
