I was thinking yesterday of all the local "world class" steel players who are not members of the forum,,,or who are largely unknowns outside this area,,,,like Denny Mathis,,,Randy Reinhardt,,,Rick Price,,,Kenny Grohman (haven't heard of Kenny in several years),,,Gary Maddox (not sure if he is still around),,,guys that could share the stage with anyone,,, anyway,,seems like we are blessed with more than our share of GREAT players,,,,just thinking,,,
Any of you locals heard from or of Kenny or Gary lately??? |

Have always wanted to re-locate there (somewhere along I-35 between SA & Austin)but just wasn't in the cards for me in this lifetime. Maybe it's a good thing. Not very much competition here in Florida.

Yes there are probably at least 3-4 that I didn't mention. I was referring mainly to the mostly "unknowns on the forum,,,non-forum members thar the forum has has not had an opportunity to know. Yes,,,Roger and Tommy are definitely world class. Don Biersedt(?) and Bobby Dardeman deserve a mention,,,man,,the list goes on and on!!!
I remember MANY years ago when Randy Reinhardt sat and traded licks with Emmons, back and forth,,,the battle of the steels,,LOL,,,there was no doubt by anyone that that Randy held his own,,,and then some. |

I remember talking to Scotty back in 1994 about great players, and he told me he knew guys who can play better then Buddy, but they just never got the right exposure... and I'm thinking he was right....

yes, "better" for a lack of better word I guess... once you get to that level, "better" is really not the right word ... but you know what I mean...

| I went to see Jerry Blanton playing Saturday night. They played all the old standards of Merle, Ray Price, Buck and so on. He was playing a new prototype of the Blanton steel guitar. Jerry is a true professional and belongs on any list of steel guitar players. |

The San Antonio Steel Guitar Association holds monthly jams and all are welcome. We typically have a mix of pro and beginners/intermediate players and encourage all players, regardless of level, to come out and join us. We meet the second Sunday of each month (except Nov, Dec, Jan), at the American Legion in Converse, Tx. More info is available on our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/satxsga

Here's what you non-Texans should do on your next vacation:
Fly to San Antonio and check into the Menger Hotel, the legendary 19th century hotel and bar where Teddy Roosevelt recruited the Rough Riders in 1898. Have a drink in the bar, mandatory.
Then go across the alley, literally, to the actual Alamo and experience the Shrine of Texas Liberty. After that, cross the street to the Riverwalk where the women can shop and everyone can eat at one or more various Tex-Mex-pensive restaurants on the couple-mile or so walk along the river.
Either very late at night, or in the morning, you'll have to have breakfast at the very commercial but legendary Mi Tierra restaurant. A must-eat-there place. If you go there in the morning, venture down to the Mercado district for some serious souvenir shopping.
Then, if you puedes hablar la lengua muy bien, ask a local where his family eats. He'll probably direct you to a little hole-in-the-wall place that only has Spanish on the menu and the waitstaff barely speaks English. THOSE are the places I like to eat, even more than the fancy places on the river, or Mi Tierra, even.
Probably not very much steel guitar to speak of in the city of SA... that I'm aware of, anyway..., but in the surrounding hamlets like Helotes, Bandera, New Braunfels, Anhalt, Quihi, Martinez, Seguin, and all the way up to and including Austin, there should be enough to make you wish you had more time to spend.

I understand that Buddy Treadwell got to be a pretty fine Steel player. I only got to hear him one time at the Junction in 65 and he was playing mostly fiddle that night..
