This is my latest from Bruce, and it's so gorgeous I just thought I would share a look at it with all of my friends here. Bruce says this will be his last all natural guitar for quite some time due to the time and intensive labor involved in building these kind of guitars. I've built some all natural bodies myself a few times, so I know where he's coming from on that.
This one is 8 & 8 Birdseye Maple, wood necks, and mother-of-pearl inlay. Bill Lawrence 705 on the E-9th and an 805 on the C-6th. This guitar seems to sustain forever, and has killer tone like nothing I've ever heard or played before. Bruce's new changer system and the solid Birdseye maple probably has a lot to do with that. I've played Emmons push-pull's that didn't have sustain like this guitar does! To say I love it would be a bit of an understatement! Anyway, here's a front view of it for you.

WOW! Nice guitar!!! I was just thinking the other day how the only thing that I wish my Zum had was a lacquer finish versus mica....not only does Bruce have the mechanics of the pedal steel perfected, he's quite gifted with the natural cabinets as well.
Amazing!!! I'm deeply jealous!

Geez where did you get the idea for that colored maple???ha(now you have a steel that matches your shirt....ha).....Danny that is just too cool for school and tell bruce he Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out did himself on that one....I WANNA PLAY IT?????

Thanks for the nice compliments guys.
Ricky, I saw this guy who had a Blue, natural birdseye maple Falawka, and I like the color so much, I decided to feature that guitar on a famous Jagwire Strings Tee-Shirt! Can't remember who's guitar that was now. :-)
Dave, feel free to put up a photo of this one of the web page if you like. It's a one of a kind, and a beautiful hue of blue birdseye maple. Bruce is pretty proud of it too. |

Blue is not my favorite color but it wouldn't take much looking at your Zum to change my mind. It has the 2005 Sho Bud look ! I love it.

Jim. Thanks for the compliments. Yes, I do plan on bringing this guitar to play at your show, and I'm really looking forward to seeing everybody there.
Roger, being this is the last all natural guitar Bruce intends to build, I probably won't be putting this one up for sale at anytime in the near future. Sorry. I ordered this one just for the purpose of playing at the steel shows. Other than that, it will stay in it's case. |

| I think this is the most beautiful Steel I have ever seen...I put this steel as the wallpaper on my desktop...I love Zums, especially this one..I have an '85 D10 Emmons and an SD10 Fessenden but that Zum is just plain beautiful. |

Danny that is one of the best looking steels I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!Could you please put me down as number two on the list if you do decide to sell it, then if Roger does`ent come up with the scratch......who knows...that guitar IMHO is worth at least two wives and a barrel full of possums!!!!!!!

That is a stunningly beautiful guitar! I have two lacquer Zum's, both S-10's on double bodies. I am curious about the pickup choice on yours. I have a Bill Lawrence 910 on my blue guitar and a Jerry Wallace True-Tone on the sunburst guitar. I like the sound of the TT best, but the BL is quieter and causes fewer headaches. I play for a Southern Gospel Quartet and they have a pretty low tolerance for hum.
How did you arrive at the 705 as your E9th choice. (And, where did you find one? Is BL making them again?)

The Bill Lawrence 705 and 805 hot-rail style pickups are no longer being made. I've had a couple of sets of these that I've kept around for quite a while to try them out in different guitars I've had. Although Bill Lawrence does indeed make some great pickups for steel guitar, (i.e. L-710, L-910, etc.) these particular pickups just happen to work out in my ZumSteels better than most others I've tried, and especially so on this all natural birdseye maple guitar. Bruce wasn't sure himself how these pickups would work on this guitar, but after playing it for a couple of days, he agreed that these particular pickups were a fantastic combination for this guitar, and of course, they are quite. This is an absolute must for me in the recording studios, as well as on many live events. We have plenty of problems already trying to keep this hiss and hum down on our amps sometimes, and having a quite pickup indeed does help aleviate some of that frustration. :-)
The Jerry Wallace True-Tone picks are very good too, and in fact, Bruce uses these on a lot of the guitars he builds. Although I do like the True-Tone pickups, they are a bit noisy for my taste. However, they are better than many of the other factory offerings in single coil pickups. The single coil pickups do provide a certain sparkle to the tone that I do like, unfortunately, you have to sacrifice the hum.
Bill Lawrence was making a pickup some time ago, (an L-610,) which was a single coil pickup sound, without the hum. I liked this pickup too, but it wasn't quite as hot as I liked to give me the strong signal to the preamp like the "7" and "9" series pickups do.
As you've probably noticed, the same pickup in an identical guitar may or may not have quite the same tone when compared to each other, and hence, it's really a matter of experimenting with different pickups till you get what you think you're looking for.
In essence, the pickup doesn't necessarilly provide the "tone" so to speak, but rather, amplifies what the guitar and strings are putting out. Although brands of guitars indeed do differ, both in tone and quality, in my personal opinion, I believe most of the perverbial "tone" is really in the hands of the player.
