Have any of you guys ever used one of these cheapos or something like it? This one gets better reviews than the Gemini.

I have been using a Tascam DP-008ex and it wore out a few days after the warranty expired.
I like to record gigs. Every now and the I get something good enough to put on youtube. I don't want to spend a lot because we work real cheap and even play free a lot. If one of the cheap rack mount recorders would work even fairly well I would like it because I could put it in the rack with the power amp. Basically, I am trying to find out if any of these are worth looking at before replacing the Tascam that just wore out. We don't buy real expensive gear because we are still striving to be second best and aren't part of the upper class who are widely celebrated. However, we are number on in one category. With all sincerity I do believe we are the most humble. I wish we were the cheapest but there are people around here who play constantly and never get paid.

I would check out the zoom H4. It is astonishing. You can get absolutely pro level field recordings done with it. Super easy and very flexible. Cheaper too.

+1 on a Zoom, I think the converters are better than the Tascam recorders, and I've owned both. They just sound better.. The only problem is the Zooms are handheld recorders, and the OP asked for rack mountable.
I'm not sure what's out there for that, but I'm curious. |

That might work if I could keep from losing it.
Usually what I do is use the rec out on my mixer as the input source to the recorder. Based on your experience would it do that easy enough. I also need to make sure the line in doesn't go through a pre amp.
I have developed a rule of thumb for electronic devices. The more it does the faster it will malfunction. All I need to do is record left and right wav files. Anything else a recorder does is a potential break down.

Rack mount ? Sure I use a Gemini DRP-1 , records to a USB stick or SD card in wav or MP3.
No issues except some of the important functions are missing from the very brief manual !
It sits under my PC monitor in a single rack space. It's not portable, for that I use a Zoom H2.
I think it was $150 from MF. I've had it about 2 or 3 years, if it breaks I'll buy another !

You can do that with pretty much any portable Wav/MP3 recorder, just be sure it has a LINE IN.
I would grab a Zoom H2 as it can fill a sock with recording tasks including the one you desire ! About 5 hours on a set of batteries or you can use the included power adapter. Records to an SD card.
You just want to be aware that if you record a long show in a WAV format, the file size is going to be HUGE ! Like REAL HUGE. GIGA Bytes not Mega Bytes . Be careful what you pray for !

X&Y built in mic
One foot from my Nashville 1000 amp
ZUM Steel
ALESIS effects rack unit
A combo of Chorus and reverb, Reverb and delay or just reverb.
