Here is a question i always wanted to ask the professional steel players. I always see where someone is selling a steel once owned to Paul Franklin or Buddy Emmons or JOhnny Cox or Hal Rugg or John Hughy, i mean any of the top players in the music business.
I was a non- pro at one time and i was even playing at night after my work in brick factory , Wednesday through Sunday, At different shows here in Missouri. But for about 15 years i played the same universal Zum steel
So I just wonder when these people play pro like the above players, seriously how many steels they go through say in a years time and are they gave to them or reduce priced or they actually buy them. Cause to me just the strings was an awful expensive hobby, But it was something i loved to do. I ain't meaning to be smart i just wanted to know.Cause i see so many of them sell that way

Charles.. I think you are reffering to what is called "artist endorsement".. It happens all the time, big musical instrument companies give TONS of equipment away to the "big boys"..but I can't really say if this happens with pedal steel guitars.
Steels are not mass produced or mass purchased the way guitars are, they are a much more "personal" instrument... I could be wrong. but I'll bet these days very few are "given away".. too much work for too little return..
I'll bet Fender gave some away back in the 60's to well known players, but I'll leave that topic to Jody.... bob |
