My friend David turned me on to this tune. Lots of time for the pedal steel to shine on the intro, fills and solos. I thought some of you might be interested. I'm usually late to the party so this may be old news to some of you.

I'm not usually a fan of covers, but I think this is like what PF's Wish you Were Here would have been on the original cut with a little more country edge. [I know that David Gilmour plays steel guitar too.]
Maybe someone can tell us who played steel on this recording? I believe Austin Tripp is currently touring with Cody Jinks band.
Anyway, Cody and his ilk are doing way more country stuff than so called country music artists are doing. Is it all country? No, but there's a lot of traditional sounding stuff and gobs of steel guitar.
Cody, Whitey Morgan and the 78's, Jamey Johnson, Sturgill Simpson, Mo Pitney, Lera Lynn, Margo Price et al. are using steel players, some are producing the music too, like Josh Grange did with Lera Lynn.
Then there's Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Big Sandy been around for a while, so I'm hearing a lot of steel guitar around. I see and hear most of it on PBS...shows like Austin City Limits, Music City Roots, Bluegrass Underground, Michael Jonathan's Old Time Radio Hour etc.
There's a lot of steel guitar around. Just don't expect much from broadcast radio.

Pink Floyd was and is still my favorite group.
Their music/lyrics have always been different and imaginative.
I still remember the first time I heard "Dark Side of the Moon" back in '73.
.........and I really like this version of "Wish You Were Here".
I had no idea.......thanks for posting it.

| Lots of more traditional style country stuff too. Cast no Stones, covers of Merle's The Way I Am, Crystal's Ready for the Times to get Better, low and mean Hippies and Cowboys, sort of outlaw stuff. Very honest and enjoyable music with good doses of pedal steel. |

Turned on the radio just now. The wind was blowing just right, and I picked up the Ranch, out of Corsicana. Great station for Texas artist, and country music. I heard this song playing, and the steel just blew me away! Great job Austin. Beautiful. I kept thinking, as I listened, sounds like Pink Floyd? Ha. Love this cover, and love the steel on it.
They keep saying steel is dying out. BS!!! They just aren't listening to the right stuff. |

Pink Floyd was one of my favorite bands since I was a teenager back in Croatia.... still to this day I have their CD in my car stereo...

That's great. I've always had a soft spot for The Floyd but Wish You Were Here is actually the last album of theirs I bought or listened to.
Given David Gilmour's lap steel style, I'm surprised he never tried connecting up the pedals on his Fender 1000 he used in the studio to go down that route.
Regarding the other bands you mentioned, Big Sandy's band hasn't had a steel player for a few years now. Lots of steel around though, I'm glad to say. |

| Cody has definitely had some great steel players around him. Milo Deering is fantastic as usual on 'Adobe Sessions'. Roger Ray is impressive and shows off a little more than he usually does with the Stragglers on '30'. Johnny Up is on I'm Not the Devil along with a new lead guitar player. |

Don Don w/Dale Watson is amazing. Considering his psychedelic roots I'm surprised he hasn't done something like this. I agree about "modern" country i.e., Pop Music. I recently saw the McGraw/Hill "Soul2Soul" show and was encouraged to see a PSG on stage. Of course, the few times it was played, it didn't stand a chance being heard over thundering bass and kick drum. But I'm sure it sounded sweet in their in-ear monitors.
As for Pink Floyd covers, I've always been a fan of Luther Wright and the Wrongs', "Rebuild the Wall." I know its got its haters, but it works for me.

Well, you're welcome of course. I hardly listen to radio anymore. I would probably never known about this tune if a friend of mine didn't bring it by for me to hear.
I agree his music seems honest and Austin's steel work sounds great too. |
