Recently I got a replacement copy of the 1917 Leon Coleman book I learned to play from.

On the very bottom of page 20 it mentions dropping the C# 2nd string of the original A low bass tuning to C natural for the Am tuning.

This Am tuning would be the root of the C6 tuning, as strings 1-2-3 are A C E, the same as the most common C6 tunings.

Now this book was copyright 1917; that's pretty far back.

BTW, no musical examples of Am tuning in the book.
