I've been considering going the rack rig direction while I still have some youth yet. What power amp would you recommend and also Pre amp?
I was spying on mike johnsons rig the other day but couldn't make out what he was using . Looked to be Mesa Boogie but Im not positive. Sound was 100% either way.
I need to get something put together thats reasonably priced. Thanks

I was using a Walker preamp in a single space rack into a Stewart PA-100 power amp mounted inside an open back cabinet with a JBL K-130 and two of them if I wanted to run stereo. While I still have those items I'm currently using the same Walker into a Carvin TS-100 tube power amp and using closed back Webb cabinets with K-130 and E-130 for stereo. I use a Zoom CDR-70 for effects and have it inside the bottom of the rack case. This is the best tone I've ever had.

The current rack setup is a Roland GP100 preamp and a Stewart PA200B as a power amp. Having another Steward would be really nice but have not found one.

I have been looking at getting another power amp for some time but not a clue as to what. I really like fanless, single space amps but there just aren't all that many to pick from. (ART and Behringer are the only two I have come across) The 2 space class D amps all have very noisy fans among other things I don't care for.

The GP-100 is also an amazing preamp/effects unit as I used one for quite some time years ago and the Stewart power amps are one of the few power amps that can be run bridges into 4 ohms. Robert, I have an extra Stewart PA-100B if you're looking for one.

I don't have a lot of experience with rack gear, but I recently got my hands on a Carvin TS100. And I'll agree with David, it's my best sound ever. I drive it with a Sarno V8 preamp, and it drives a pair of vintage Altec speakers. The tube goodness just oozes out of this setup! It sizzles and sings with the EL34s that come from the factory. But as good as the EL34s sounded, I had to try it with 6L6s, and I like those too. Maybe more headroom, less sizzle, but still silky smooth tube tone. I'll probably put EL34s back in one side, since I don't need to run it bridged, best of both worlds that way.

Of course YMMV, depending on what's in your signal chain. Here's mine for what it's worth: Zum Encore-->Black Box-->pot volume pedal-->Zoom MS-70CDR-->Sarno V8-->Carvin TS100-->Altec 417 and 418 speakers

Just to add a bit to the Carvin....Tommy purchased the Carvin from me as I thought I wouldn't miss that particular amp. WRONG! I missed it enough to buy another Carvin and Tommy shared in my appreciation for such an amazing amp! I don't intend on having sellers remorse again on the Carvin TS100!!! Mr. Green

Interesting on the Carvin TS100.... I have looked at that one several times as my main amp for years has been a Music Man RD100. I really like how a good tube amp sounds, the weight, not so much! The rack mount would be a good compromise.
