Hi! I'm thinking of making the leap over from NoPeds. Is this a decent brand? I know the price is right. The guy says it has one KN and doesn't know if it's upgradeable. Do you? Thanks for your help, and please don't scoop me, PDXers!

Patrick,
The brand is fine, but that particular model is a bit limited in what it will do. If you read the thread on pedal steel about the Sho~Bud Maverick, you'll get more of an idea.

This guitar is an M.S.A. student model, which is quite similar to the Maverick.

If this guitar is what you can afford, it will get you started, but if you stay with the pedal steel, you'll outgrow it very quickly. I personally would recommend you spend a little more and get a guitar with a minimum of 3 pedals and 3 knee levers, preferably 4 knees though.

Hope this helps.

Don't get a Red Baron Or Sidekick. They are made out ot flimsy plywood and the body flex is bad. You can get a used pro model almost as cheap.

Buy it- Even tho it may be limited you can learn basic things like chord positions, how to hold the bar, how to work the volume pedal. Go ahead and look to the future fo a better guitar but you won,t lose on this one. If you don't like it call me and I will take it off your hands. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works.

Thanks a bunch, guys. I am going to pass on this one. I actually have read threads about the Maverick and remember phrases like "door stop" popping up. Ed, I appreciate your advice, but I'm already a lap steeler ('51 Dual Pro) so I have the basics that you mention down. The guy is considering shipping it to someone in San Fran, so if you contact him, maybe you get in the game.

Again--thanks much!

Smart move Patrick on not buying that steel. I have a friend who has one and if they ever get where they will not tune then you have to get them worked on. The one he has he cannot get the A pedal to pull like it should and the knee lever will not pull as well. I would pass and put my money somewhere else.

i started out with a carter starter and i wished i would have gone right to a pro model instead of a starter. starters are very liminited it is made of cheap material.thats why they are a starter model. go right to a pro model and save yourself some money. doc.

Patrick, you might head over to Morrison Bridge Music on Belmont, they have a little Dekley S10 for sale right now. It will take a little setting up, but is a huge step up from the likes of the Maverick, Sidekick or Red Baron.

Certainly feel free to contact me via email if you want to pursue the PSG, learn a few chords, etc.
