Has anyone re-rodded a SKH Emmons LeGrande from 7/64 pull rods to 3/32 rods? 7/64 stainless rods are pretty hard to find while 3/32 rods are easier to find these days. Just wondering. _________________ GFI Ultra D-10 keyless

Goggle 7/64" drill rod. That will work just fine. |

I have made several rods for Emmons Steel. I make them for a friend of mine who repairs and changes steels. I have gotten Stainless Steel 7/64" rods from Fasten All. They order them for me and arrive in about 7 days.
When you order rods from Fasten All tell them to cut them in 3 or 4 foot lengths.
Speaking from experience the rod comes in 20 ft. lengths. I ordered 40 ft. of rod when it came it was 2 20 ft. rods taped to a 20 ft. piece of 1" X 3" lumber and the shipping was very high. Since then I get them cut into 3 ft. lengths.
I Chuck them in my Miniature Lathe and cut the groove for the E Clip, and do the 90 degree bend for the bell crank on both ends. Then you can make 2 rods out of one rod by just cutting it and threading it.
Make a jig to bend the 90 degree angle out of a piece of heavy metal by drilling a 7/64" hole the depth of the bend. Then take a hammer and hammer it down till you get a true 90 degree bend. Just bending the rod with a pair of pliers will not give the true 90 degree and the rod will drag on other rods. Good Luck and Happy Steelin. |

I probably should have been more clear in my original post. These are stainless rods with no "bends" on the end. One end is threaded for the nylon standoff, the other end passes through a locking part w/set screw on the 4-hole bell cranks. The smaller diameter rods will probably work fine, but I want to know if anyone has tried them. I do appreciate the replies! McMaster-Carr and other suppliers also have 3/32" stainless rod stock in various lengths/alloys. _________________ GFI Ultra D-10 keyless
