I am new to the steel which will become very apparent if you choose to listen to the links below. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We all started right where you did and it just takes time to get it all together. I've been at it 37 years and I'm still tryin but I can't think of another instrument I'd rather play.

My advice is to do whatever it takes to find a local steel player to help you. What might take you months to figure out might only take an evening with someone helping.

There's really no substitute for a live teacher in my opinion. I had two teachers and it took me 4 months to get to a point I could actually go out and be able to sit in and play a little bit.

There's also a ton of stuff on Youtube to listen and practice to.

If you have the desire you will get there.

To play like that, you didn't just start. Great sound.

You are doing great for a newbie. You get a year under your belt go back and listen to these and see how you have improved. Everyone starts on the bottom and works their way us. Keep it up and you will have something you can enjoy for years to come.

Thank you all for the kind comments.
I am a retired radio air personality that was mainly involved with country music in the 80's and 90's so the steel plays a large part in my music preference.
I've only been playing a couple months and getting everything from the internet without a local instructor. Thanks again for the kind comments and helpful info !

Brian, where in GA. are you located. We use to live, and still have a daughter and grand children, in Savannah.

Brian,

I highly recommend the book "Pedal Steel Guitar" by Winnie Winston. Amazon has it. It is the book I used to learn with. I often tell people my teacher was Winnie Winston! It's a great learning tool with CD included with exercises, and a lot of steel history.

Good job Brian! You sound pretty good for a total beginner. I have been at E9 for 18 months and still dont have the guts to post. I agree with Jon about Winnies book. You'll use it for many years.
