Do any of you fellow forum members know of a good amp tech in or around central Calif. I have an Evans E150 that pops very loudly when turned off and on. It is kind of an intermittent problem but seems to do it when the amp is cold. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Marty

Thank you for the suggestion Michael, but I've already tried the Google search, found a guy in Fresno and he said he checked everything and told me it was a bad speaker re-cone job. He charged me $95, I sent the JBL to Speaker Repair Pros, paid another $160 for a fresh recone and I am back where I started. I'm hoping to hear from someone who has actually dealt with a tech I can trust.

Thank you,

Marty

Many solid state amps thump mightily on powerup and shutdown. I'd talk to Scott Buffington and make sure there's a problem. And what happens if you turn the master volume to zero before powerup and shutdown?

Gerry Walker had me add a thermistor to the power switch on a similar issue and that solved the problem.

I had that problem with my Peavey Delta Blues. I found if I turned the reverb control down to '0' before I powered down, it didn't do it... that amp has tubes and a PCB.

Ed Sanner is the man for all things solid state. He was designing SS amps in the mid 60's for Mosrite. He has always fixed anything I've thrown at him. He is in a Lake Isabella, but you can mail him the chassis. PM me for contact info.

Thank all of you for the suggestions and troubleshooting advice. I talked to Scott Buffington about this and was told that the very large caps in this chassis are not discharging at the same time, hence the periodical POP. He also said it was not going to effect the performance of the amp and can be avoided by turning the master volume to 0 when powering on or off. He was very helpful and I sure appreciate his explanation and his time.

Thank you,

Marty
