I stumbled across this song of Michelle Phillips from her 1977 solo album, Victim of Romance on Spotify. The song, "Aching Kind"is also on YouTube. After the instrumental solo, she sings about steel guitars and honky tonk bars. Really great song with some minimal steel guitar in the background, which according to the second link (scroll to bottom of article) is played by Scott Free. Anyone know Scott Free?

Scott Free sounds like an alias used by a player contracted to
"another label" |

wow- he was busy- drums, percussion, guitar, steel etc... it's like him and Jack Nitzsche played the whole record themselves...
Why haven't I heard of this guy?
Maybe Dean Parks knows of him...
and is John Moon Martin the same guy who wrote Cadillac Walk and Bad Case of Loving You!? seems like it... |

An outtake from the cd- release of the album. It sounds a lot like Buddy Emmons.

Joachim, that is no occasional steel player on that song. It does sound like Buddy. So who is this guy playing? We need to find out who this is. Could this be Buddy on this cut without acknowledgement? Does Mr. Free go by another name? _________________ John Brabant

John: "The Aching Kind" sounds not like Buddy, but "Uncle Louie" does. It might be something from John's first album "The Wolfking of LA" which is full of Buddy's and Red Rhodes playing. I have to check out the Michelle Phillips album if there's another track with steel. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |
