Well me..? First off because I want to and second off because of what the flexibility of the 2 tunings ( which are really just 2 whole steps apart) offers.

My thoughts on the opinion that the "C6th is from another world" is that many of us have not been looking at it in it's simplicity. I started looking at the C6th in E intervals with a "C" under the E. Opened up an enormous world, actually one I already lived in !

Merry Christmas..

I play a D-10 Emmons because that is the instrument upon which I sing my song. It is neither the best instrument nor the worst. It simply "is."

I also love and play a D-10 Fessenden. It fits me, it always has.

I play a D-10 because the E9 neck came with the C6 neck when I got it.

I play a D-10 because I learned on one. I don't want to have to relearn grips and pedal configurations on a single 12. I would rather spend the time learning new things than relearning what I already know. JMO

I play D-10 because I can rest my hands on C6 while I`m thinking what to mess up on E9.

I like them, and if I got a "Universal", I could still see Buddy Charleton giving me that "kindly worried look" and thinking, "Well son, maybe you can learn to play that one right..."

Maybe it's just because I don't know any better.

Besides if I decide to take the ten years to figure out how to tune my D10 Sho~bud where all the thirds and sixths are 15 sents flat, and everything matches up, and another ten years for the C6 neck, getting the Es to match the E9 neck, I'll be 71 years old, and then have to do it all over again for a Universal..

I ain't got that much time left..

The first pedal guitar I ever got was a double neck. (That kinda sold me.)

But, do you want an even better reason?

Probably 90% or better of the "pros" play double-necks.

To me, that pretty much makes it a "no brainer"...at least, until you can't carry a "double"!

In regards to what Donny said, to me it makes sense. If D10's were not the best choice, why wouldn't the majority of the pro's be using something else? Obviously there's a reason why that's what most use.

Maybe Buddy will weigh in with an answer about why he uses a D10 instead of a Universal. That would be interesting to know.

i play a D10 since, as mentioned above, it seems to be the standard horn.
i got one having never played one before & i must confess that i find 2 necks are better than 1
on the other hand i'd love to try a U12 or even a D12
never got my mits and feets on one yet
c'est Toot !

I startwd out as a "6th" player. I got my first "good" double neck when I got back from "Nam" - '71. Frankly, I got it so I would have something that I could SORTA play while I was trying to learn that strange "E-9th" monster. I also love the weight and expense?!?! Jimmie

About 20 years ago I decided I wanted to carry around less guitar so I bought a S12. Of course I kept the D10. I know that everything is on it if you just get used to it. Slowly I tried to move from the D10 to the S12 on stage. My problem was that while playing songs I learned on C6 that really cooked I would find myself in the middle of a run and without thinking (I do that well)I would instictively run to the wrong fret and make a big boo boo that everyone could hear. It just did not work out for me. I like the various big voicings and lower tones I could get with the 9th but gave up and stayed with the D10. If I were to advise a beginner I would probably tell them to get the S12 and learn it.

Because 20 strings, 8 pedals, and 5 knee levers are enough to keep me busy for the next 20 years. By then I will need the pack-a-seat with the side car to keep depends in.
That and the fact that I am a lefty, and I take what I can find as far as used PSG's go, unless I make a major investment (major for me anyway). If you right handed players could be a lefty for a year, and be looking for instruments you would know whAt I mean (walk a mile in my moccasins). Plus I love my Dekley D-10 and those low C6th chords.

If I leave my neck selector on my Legrande in the middle, It becomes a S20.

Thanks Dave, that's interesting to read. You're right...I should have used the search function and then I'd have known.
