I spent part of Christmas Eve putting a new set on my LDG, and I learned, among other lessons, to string #'s 1 and 10 first.
That said, are there any rules of thumb/suggestions, tricks, etc., in stinging technique, such as estimating cut lengths for particular strings, number of turns/winds on the peg, "third hand" ideas to keep everything engaged and taut while winding, etc., etc.
All comments welcome with thanks, and Merry Christmas/Happy New Year to all.

What is the reasoning behind stringing 1 and 10 first? Which strings do you string up next? [This message was edited by Joey Aguilera on 26 December 2004 at 01:42 AM.] |

Joey, when I did the restring, I 'logically' started at 10 and worked over to 1, one string at a time, instead of taking them all off.
(Ricky Davis commented on this some time ago, saying there was no difference in effect of either technique.)
There's almost no room for work on 10 and 1 when all strings are on (such as in the middle of the second set--which you can't do anything about anyway), but I figured, next time I'll take them all off, do 10 and 1 first, then 9 and 2, 8 and 3, etc.--might as well make the job as enoyable as possible.
Incidentally, and thanks to Sonny Priddy, the Carter web page led me to www.steelguitarinfo.com/infoindex.html, where there is an excellent restring tutorial, complete with pictures.
