Does your Zum move when you work the pedals or knee levers? mine moves to the left when I pedal A+B. It moves a little when I engage any of the pedals, but more when I pedal A+B and RKR. I've checked the end plates for loose screws, and I've checked for binding, but hadn't found anything. Just wonderd if all Zums do that?

Some time ago I owned a guitar with that very problem....it ceased when I realized it was caused by my over engaging the pedals and levers.

Mine does not move at all. Zum's are a smooth playing instrument and need very little pressure to activate the floor pedals or knee levers. If you are used to playing a stiff action guitar, you may need some time to adjust. Be gentle.

Mike I don't think I'm over engaging the pedals. From what I've seen since I've owned this (my first) Zum, over engagin the pedals would be hard to do on one of these guitars. It takes very minimal pedal movement to fully engage the pedals.
Any ideas on what could be causing this movement guys? no loose end plates,The legs are adjusted as level as I can get them. and I couldn't find any binding anywhere, but could have overlooked somethin.

?? No. I have a U-12 with pad. Is the whole guitar swaying? Legs sliding across the floor? Pedal rack loose? You have a strange situation.

Mine is as solid as a rock -- how old is your guitar, it may need to go to Bruce for a service and lube job !! It could be just a bit gummed up from dirt and dust etc.

Make sure the legs are screwed tight to the body. I owned a couple Zums (and other guitars) in which the legs would at times work loose. This would only happen after several hours of playing.

Also check to make sure the pedal bar is tight to the legs and that the length of the legs are all adjusted the same (assuming a level floor)

Now don't do looking for your trusty pipe wrench as that is certainly not needed!

Sometimes it feels like the whole room is spinning and moving in about the middle of the last set but I think the steel is OK.

No, the whole guitar don't move. the top of the guitar just sways to the left and forward a little. It's not causing any problems as far as the guitar gettin out of tune etc, it's just kind of annoying seein it move like that. It moves worst when I engage the RKR which has four pulls on it, so I can understand it movin some with that lever,(kinda stiff) but with just A+B pedals----??
The guitar is a 1990 and is an exceptional guitar in every way except the movement when mashing the A+B pedals and RKR.
The pedal bar is tight and the legs are as level as I can get em.
Would Bruce charge me if I were to send it back to him to let him look at it? I hate to do that, I only have the one guitar and I'd go nuts without it. I was hopin some of you forumites might be able to help me figure it out.

Terry,

My Zum has never acted like what you describe!

My suggestion-- call Bruce and discuss your situation with him and I'll bet you will get your problem solved one way or the other.

Bruce answers his phone and will help you with any kind of problem you might have with his guitar. Bruce is first class when it comes to help after the sale . Even if someone buys one of his guitars used,Bruce will always help correct or identify should there be a problem.

Terry, I have two of them, both as solid as a rock - BUT - I have seen this before. What I would look at are the rubber "feet" on the bottom of the legs. These may not be original. There are many differant "types" of these available at hardware stores, and they are not all alike. Some are "spongy", and have a tendancy to move as you pedal. I just got four of them for my old Fender - small, white, and very solid. The "mushy", or not quite as firm ones will tend to "roll under" very slightly. This will let your guitar move forward somewhat on the left end. Also make sure that the "feet" are fully on the bottom of the leg. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas!! Jimmie

I agree with Jimmie, in that you should check out the rubber tips. I think he's probably right on with that suggestion. I've seen them cause that before too.

Terry - With the guitar fully assembled, but still upside down, in the case, can you move any of the legs? Check the screws that hold the end plates to the guitar's body. Also, while the guitar is still upside down, try moving the legs by grasping the large part of the legs. Then, try moving the legs by grasping the smaller part of the leg, the part that is adjustable. Sometimes the clutch mechanism inside the leg can come loose and cause a guitar to wobble a little bit

Terry,

I have a S-10 Zum and it moves about the same as yours. Not so much with just pushing down A+B, but with any of the knee levers engaged it does rock. I spoke with Bruce about it, and he did indicate that you should expect some movement.

I've noticed that when it comes to "little things" like this, I tend to notice them and it begins to bug me. So much so that when I ask others if they notice it, they look at me like I'm nuts. My thought is that just about any pedal steel WILL move about a bit, especially when engaging the levers, regardless the brand. Most either aren't really paying attention to it or don't care.

Unfortunately, we don't fall in either category.

Now, if you are seeing a tremendous amount of movement (say, an inch or more of sway) then you may indeed need to call Bruce because that would be extreme, IMO.

Thanks Lee, I'll check the legs, inner and outter. I've checked the endplate screws they are tight.

Joe, I've wondered if most guitars were suppose to move a little. mine moves almost an inch, which is very noticable.

I think I've found the problem. I think Jimmy and Lem were right about the rubber tips. I turned the guitar over in the case and checked the legs, and they were all tight. then I checked the rubber tips, and the front ones are very mushy, they move around real easy.
Where is the best place to get these tips?
Home Depot, or any good hardware store?
thanks for all the help.

Home Depot has the good (hard rubber) ones. The ones made of plastic are about useless!

Avoid the white rubber ones, as old granny-types might mistake your steel for a walker!

I have owned four steels now, and all have had some movement...some more than others.

The worst was my Sho-Bud Maverick. I had a Dekley and a Carter, and both were double-frame universals. They had little movement, but not as much as my Zum. My Zum undoubtedly has a bit more wiggle room as it is lighter (single frame). In fact, when Bruce played my guitar a few months ago, he did not notice anything unusual in terms of the feel or movement...that's good enough for me
