Topic: '69 Fender Super |

I have an older Super Reverb, Serial # A42434 stamped on it. Not sure if it is the serial # or not. The speakers have a blue sticker on them that says Fender special design speaker. These are the original speakers. I am trying to figure out just what kind of speakers they really are. The Amp does have the silver drip edge around the grill cloth. I bought this for my dad way back when. Just trying to identify what speakers they are. Any help would be appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken those speakers were made for Fender by Jensen.
Musicians who accumulate old Fender amps look specifically for that speaker.
I have a couple of Fender amps with those speakers. |

Hi
The 137 stamped on the speaker is the manufacturer's code number.
I think 137 is the code for CTS . |

| The speaker made in 1969', the 9th month. The amp is a 1969. The drip edge amps were made in 1968 and 1969. Beautiful amp! |

Thanks guys ! I bought this amp for my dad way back when. He used it in church. He passed away 13 years ago, and it, and a Les Paul Custom, will forever stay stock, and in my music room.

Whoa ! Great amp, and like Ken says, 69 Super. Both 68 and 69 had that famous drip edge around the speaker grill face.
Those are most likely Jensen P10R's with the Fender label on them, (maybe even Eminence ) Alnico magnet speakers rather than the typical PM ( permanent magnet) speakers that are in a majority of our amps.
Those speakers are indeed very high on the must have list , especially in the 4x10 amps.
New ones from Jenson are over $100 each, New "CLONES" from Eminence are just under $100 each.
Typical power ratings for a P10R are in the 25 watt range , so with 4 of them, you can really crank up the Supers with no fear and get that great Super Reverb tone at 4 or 5 on the volume knob.
Great amp , Great speakers, Together they created an iconic legacy.

Again, thanks for the response. I do have another question about this amp. There is a healthy coating of a white powder on the visible parts of the electronics. It is not dust, and seems like something I can clean off. What is this coating, perhaps some form of oxidation, and what is the best way to clean it ?

Don't mess with it... one of those 'if it aint broke' things. Moisture does more harm than powder, whatever it is. Perhaps you could show us a picture? I'd blow it out, but don't do more than that.

The white powder is zinc oxide from the zinc plating. Common on Fenders of that era.

Maybe try holding a vacuum hose near while you brush the powder with a dry paintbrush, old toothbrush or maybe scotchbrite (the non-scratching kind). It shouldn't hurt anything to leave it alone, though.
Looks like RCA blackplate 6L6GCs in there, very sought after. Don't let an unscrupulous tech tell you it needs new tubes because the originals are old (translation: he wants your old tubes).
On the other hand, filter capacitors might ought to be replaced if original.
I love the sound of a Super Reverb for steel. |

Thanks Bruce. I did not think it was just dust.It seems very cleanable, just wanted some reassurance that it was not a real problem. A long time ago, I had my '69 twin to a teck, and he made it a black face and up-dated the guts. I recently put the head in it's own cab, and am using the original JBL 12, and a JBL 15 in their own cabs. No need to tweak the super. Just want it original, and in good working order. You can see a pic of the system on the Tommy Huff speaker cab post.
