For the oldtimers, I came across on utube this. Hawkshaw Hawkins doing "If it ain't on the menu" My question is, What the hell kind of guitar is the guitar player playing. Does anybody know who he is or who the steel player is? I don't know how to put the utube link on here. |

I assume you are talking about the above clip.
That's Jackie Phelps on a Stratosphere guitar. Not many of them around. Chet had one. Jimmy Bryant had one.
I've seen only doublenecks. Jackie may have taken a hacksaw to his as it does look peculiar.
That film was made somewhere between 1954 and 1956.
Here's a pic of Bill Woods with one. And one owned by Bill Prince.
I should recognize that steel player, but don't. Bob Foster was on steel on the studio recording of that song, but that doesn't look like Bob to me.

Mitch, the steel player is Jim Farmer, who was with Marty Robbins for many years. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

Thanks, Clyde--I knew he looked familiar, but I did not have a properly filed pic of Farmer. And I wouldn't have expected to see him with Hawk.
Here's a better pic of him (top right) from 1957, with other members of Marty's band.
