There's a post on the Forum from Joe Goldmark asking if anyone here knows about "LAMEN, the hottest steel man on the West Coast." Neither he nor I have heard of the guy. But reading the post piqued a memory of mine.
Does anyone remember a steel player from central or northern California from the 40's or 50's named Lucky Starr? _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Could it be that Lucky Starr was Issac Asimov's favorite steel picker? Just kidding...
Keep on pickin'!

I don't think so; it sounds so ordinary. Why didn't he just use his real name Chrząszczyżewoszyce Brzęczyszczykiewicz? |

There is a real Lucky Starr, I've seen him. And I'm NOT referring to the Australian country singer of the same name.
Back in 1971 I was playing with Jimmy Bryant at the Cajun Country in N. Hollywood and on break I saw Bryant talking with an elderly looking guy. Back onstage I asked who the old guy was and he said "Lucky Starr, he's an old steel player from up in the valley." Meaning the San Joaquin Valley north of LA. It's a big place.
My curiousity piqued, I would periodically ask, over the years, of any No. Cal. players if they knew or heard of this Lucky Starr guy. No luck.
Cut to 32 years later, 2003, and I'm in Sacramento at the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame induction show. On display were more than a couple hundred 8x10 glossies of California western swing players who were HOF Inductees, many of whom were famous, and many I had never heard of, having been in TX for the majority of my career. Anyway, I'm browsing the "st" section looking for my 8x10 and lo and behold, there's a picture of a young Lucky Starr. He had an Errol Flynn mustache in the photo, just like he had when he was talking with Bryant 30 years previously. Looked kind of like Hank Penny during that era. Eureka!
I asked a bunch of older pickers at the show if they'd ever heard of this Hall of Famer, and none of them had any real recollection of the guy. So, still a mystery man.
It's now 45 years since I saw this guy talking to Bryant. There's a lot of players here who may have run across this guy, and so I'm asking once again. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
