Last night I found A cassette amongst my recordings of Maurice's vinyl albums. Many years ago I had recorded The tunes from the above mentioned vinyl albums. The tunes sound as fresh today as when they were recorded about 45 years ago.
I believe it was a 3 album box set from MSA.

There were actually 5 albums in the set, and I have them in my Itunes library and listen to them every 2 or 3 weeks. Maurice was a steel guitar genius. Another of my favorite album sets are the "Sextet Sessions" that Reece and Tom Morrell recorded with the Case brothers. There are four songs of two albums, one side per song. Some great jazz.
You may already know this, but David Wright owns the guitar that Reece used on these recordings. _________________ Darvin Willhoite
MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

Most of this is in my iTunes library and I actually have been listening to it for the past week!! If you don't have this material, Mike Perlowin can hook you up. He repackage the best of these 5 LP's into a two CD set.
Great stuff from one of the masters. _________________ Bill Cunningham

First, the credit for the CDs must be given to out fellow forumite Mike Brebes. I came up with the idea, but Mike did the work. BTW, Mike is an outstanding musician and creative genius, as well as a hell of a nice guy.
Another forumite, Joe Goldmark, loaned me the "Moods Of" LPs, as well as Reece's "Universal Steel Man" record, which was only released in Europe. Mike and I each listened to the albums, and made lists of which songs should be included on the CDs, and which should be left off. We later compared lists, and found that they wee completely identical. There was not a single song on which we disagreed.
Mike then created the masters of the 2 CDs, the second of which contains 8 songs that were previously unreleased in America. (BTW, Mike also authored my other reissue project; the Curly Chalker DVD.)
I had 1,000 copies of each CD pressed up, and after selling enough to break even, shipped the rest to Reece, who sold the rest. Unless Reece's widow Theresa has some unsold copies floating around, the initial pressings are sold out.
However, I kept the files, and can always burn more copies. Let me know if you want a set. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Great work, Mike - thanks for making these available.
Call me crazy but I hear a lot of Tommy White in these recordings, especially on the poppier numbers. |

Frank,
Maurice Anderson was a major influence
on my jazz/ contemporary playing and understanding of those genres of music. Reece was way ahead of his time.
Reece was a dear respected friend since our first meeting in 1971. Sure do miss him!

It must be pointed out that these 2 CDs do not contain every song Reece recorded on the LPs. As I previously mentioned, Mike Brebes and I compiled separate lists of what we felt was the strongest material, to be included, and what we felt was the weaker material, best left off. When we compared lists, they were identical. There was not a single tune which we disagreed on, either to be included or excluded.
They also include the 2 live cuts from the 1979 LP of the convention, and 8 cuts from his European only LP "Universal Steel Man."
In my opinion, these CDs contain some of Reece's best work during the 70s. They do not contain all of it.
My thanks to Joe Goldmark for lending me the original LPs. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

I also owned the Many Moods series. My copies were cassettes and some of them were not playing correctly any longer so, based upon this thread, I ordered the two cds from Mike. They arrived yesterday. The quality is superb. In my mind I can see the little smile Maurice would have as he played. His playing is stupendous. |

Reece took his playing in new directions not following the pack and did his own thing. Even by today's standards he would be considered an innovator. I never hear him copy anyone else but himself. |

I agree. Maurice's music theory knowledge was very extensive. He disliked being compared to other players, especially Buddy E, because he was very much his own man with his own direction. I knew him from way back in the 70's and always assumed that he would listen to a lot of jazz music in his spare time. Wrong - he told me in his later years that he would listen to bluegrass music mainly. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. I love telling this. in 1968, Tom Bradshaw held a big steel gathering in the Napa-Sonoma area on No. Cal. Many greats showed up, Noel Boggs, Zane Beck, etc. Then they introduced a fellow I hadn't heard of yet, by the name of Maurice Anderson.
They put his single-neck steel on the stage and I thought, "Oh give me a break, He can't even play a double neck", and I turned my back a started walking away. When he hit the first line, a near-bladder-function almost occurred, I say, "almost."
That gentleman captivated me like very few have before, and after meeting him in person; this man was not only outstanding, but a lovable man to boot. He was as warm as his playing and left a big mark on my life. Miss him too. |
