Link to some fabulous artistry by Pete Drake on this Cal Smith recording w/ Kapp circa 1967. Don't hear steel like that any longer imo. Hope u enjoy it.

Great sound. Lots of reverb! Possibly a plate reverb?

Try to find Tracey Nelson' s country album. Great Pete Drake backup and solos. TN was with Mother Earth.

Classic, beautiful playing. Doug, 1967 would make it either an EMT plate reverb or a really great sounding live chamber. Sounds like a plate...

Yes, plate reverb sounds so rich and full. I always think of Santo & Johnny's tune "Tear Drop" when I think of plate reverb. Of course, I'm just guessing... Cool but if you listen to the original "Sleep Walk" you'll hear a shallow reverb, probably room reverb. Then listen to S & J's follow-up song "Tear Drop". The reverb is very deep and full, almost too much. It's gotta be one of those 600 lb. plates. They came into use in the late 50's, through the 60s.

1967 on Kapp...most likely recorded at Bradley's Barn...I don't know if it's a plate or a chamber...but there were a lot of EMTs around town in that era...they are about all gone...I heard that a bunch of them went out of town and that the ones from Columbia Studios went to South America! The ones at RCA"B"are still in the attic...they run an AC unit up there to keep the plates nice and cold...nothing sounds like a plate!

One of my earlier studios was up in the hills outside of Denver in the late 70's, and we kept our plate out in the garage...man, when it got cold in the winter that plate never sounded so good, the steel plate would shrink a little and put a little extra zip in it...nothing like them, wish I still had mine...

I was convinced I was going to build a plate reverb at one time back in the late 70's I guess, since there was no way I could afford to buy one.. but I never did.

I googled just now and there are still a bunch of 'how to' articles on various sites. Might be an interesting project.

Can't they do anything you want in software nowadays?

Speaking of GREAT country music, try Doug Sahm's CD, 'The Return of Wayne Douglas' with Tommy Detamore on steel and the great fiddle of Bobby Flores. I have listened to 'They'll Never Take Her Love From Me' so many times the CD is about worn out. Thanks Tommy and Bobby, it is a wonderful CD.

Doug, the software gets pretty close, but there something about the way a real plates sits in a mix that is pretty special. I have a friend with a great one that I sometimes send vocal tracks to process though it and he sends me the returns of the plate. I'll get another one yet!

I've had the good fortune of playing this song with a band I was with a few years ago. I really enjoyed learning/playing the intro and fills, but had no idea it was Pete Drake. Thanks for 'the rest of the story', Gary. Very Happy

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

Maybe software has too many parameters. It's very easy to get reverbs that aren't possible with any physical plate device, and yet it's still called "plate" in the menu. I've never heard a plug-in that sounds like the reverb on this record. Pretty spectacular!

True. The reverb here is as deep and wide as an ocean. It must be a plate.

I thought this topic was about Pete Drake, I think it's about time he got more credit, he was an inspiration to many steelers.

Absolutely Pete deserves more credit than he gets, not just for his playing, but for all the behind the scenes help he gave other steel players. I got to hang with him and Jimmie Crawford many times, and it was always a wonderful time...

And even with the reverb chat, that EMT would only be a box in a room without his beautiful tone going through it Smile.

Yeah! Great read...thanks for sharing that, John.
I got to meet him and hang a little once, and it was definitely a highlight for me. Always loved his playing and his approach to fitting within a track.

btw, I'm still jell about your new gtr...

Thanks, John. Any more recommendations, guys, for "definitive" Pete Drake recordings I should add to my music collection?
