I know there have been posts about this before, but I can't seem to find 'em- the Shaller tuners on my 97 LeGrande II have been going south fast- they seem to not exactly strip out, but the retaining nuts just aren't the right length or something and will not hold the tuners to the keyhead. I've already bought some replacements from Emmons, but they're way too expensive and getting harder to get hold of on the phone (!). Any suggestions? Are these just regular Shaller M6 minis? I don't want to buy two full sets if I can just get replacements or even new retaining nuts, as the tuners seem to be fine... Anybody have any spares? Thanks.

You might try calling Emmons. I hear they're pretty good at getting out parts...

(And might I suggest C.O.D.?)

Mark:

Really, give 'em call at Emmons and they'll fix you up. Had this same problem about a year ago and they got the new tuners to me in just a few days.

No matter whats beens said so far, I've never had anything but excellent support from the folks there.

Again, thats my experience.

The schaller tuners are not a stock part. The Emmons Co. had them designed and made especially for them. I can only assume that the Emmons Co. still gets them. I have had a slight problem with one but swapped it with another key. You can put the stripped one where the keyhead has a thinner wall, if it is not completely stripped all the way down.

Thanks for all the replies, guys, but here's my dilemna: Most of the keys were fine, and the ones that have gone bad don't seem to be even stripped at all, but rather that the bushing/sleeve threaded nut things are just a minute bit too short. Rick A's suggestion about thinner washers almost cures it, but not quite. I got some replacement nuts, but they're too long. I got several replacement keys from Emmons last year, and they work fine, but were around $22-26 apiece if I remember right, which is way too high to replace the four or five more I need. And it seems they want to give out over time so perhaps I need to re-key the whole guitar. It just seems a waste, when most of them are still fine... grrrr...

Mark,
Is there any certain place on thhe keyhead that the tuner barrel nuts are stripping?
Observing the keyhead on my LeGrande, it appears that the walls are thicker near the roller end than it is at the outer end. Therefore, it would seem that the nut would not thread as deep into the tuner on strings 1,2,3,8,9,10 as it would on 4,5,6,and 7. You might try to move the tuners that the nut will not catch on to the outer end, along with a thinner washer and get some more life out of them.Just a thought.

Mark, I had a similar problem with my Pre-Ultra GFI. I couldn't get any of the tuners to grip the headstock tightly. I had to actually add thicker washers to some of the tuners. But a few were stripped out. I got longer bushings from my luthier. They were way too long, but I cut them down with a Dremel and hand files. A super pain in the butt! The tuners look like Grovers, but are un-marked. I was thinking that they might be Pings. They have a small locating pin that fits into a hole in the peghead. But that hole is a bit too large, and allowed the tuners to swivel quite a bit. I can't tell you how many hours I spent trying to fix all 20 tuners! Good luck, JB
